HYPER SHADOW

This site has been made by me for one purpose, that purpose is to show off Shadow and his awesomeness. It also talks about other main characters from the Shadow the Hedgehog world. If anyone wants to join this site to add things let me know. Nothing goes on much at this page besides the fact that this is our message board, but try out the other pages where you can read info about characters or head on over to the videos section and take a look at those. There are many things to do at Hyper Shadow. -Metalks

Black Doom
Age: ???

The main villain in Shadow the Hedgehog. He is the first evil character that remains evil through the whole game. He feels that humans are weak and that the black arms are the superior race. He promises to tell Shadow his past if he retrieves the seven chaos emeralds for him. Apparently shadow promised Black Doom that he would 50 years ago.

The Bio Lizard (picture from Sonic X)
The Bio Lizard is more like a final boss but is still a villain. The Biolizard is the prototype of the ultimate life form. So this is basically a weird version of Shadow. He appears at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. His only weakness was the glowing life-support on it's back.

Eggman Nega

Eggman Nega is from the same dimension that Blaze and Silver are from. He is just like Eggman except more evil, and acts a lot more polite. He is the second villain to stay evil for the entire game.

Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic goes by many names; Metal Sonic, metal, Hyper Metal Sonic, Mecha Sonic, Neo-Metal Sonic, and Metallix. He was created by Eggman to destroy Sonic. He is surprisingly faster than Sonic. He is very strong and he is very clever. In most of Metal's appearance's he has played a minion but in Sonic Heroes he locks Eggman away and pretends to be him. He then transforms into the metal madness and then the metal overlord.
Neo metal Sonic was the version of Sonic in the game Sonic Heroes.

Mephiles the Dark

Mephiles appeared in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 06.
He is a blob-like demon who took up the form of Shadow through his shade. This creature is one of the two forms that make up Solaris, the entity that attempts to consume all of time. He is also the main villian in the Shadow the Hedgehog storyline in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 06.

Dark Gaia

Dark Gaia is a creature that is sealed in the planets core. Every one million years he awakes from his slumber and destroys the world to be rebuilt by Light Gaia. Eggman woke Dark and Light Gaia before they're slumber was over and Dark Gaia spread around the world due to being unstable. (seen in the intro)

Shadow the Hedgehog

In this game Shadow is trying to remember his past. He did not get his answers of who he is from Eggman in Sonic Heroes. I'm not even going to explain this game's story because it has 12 different stories. At the beginning aliens start taking over the planet and a eye comes to Shadow and tells him that it is time to fulfill his promise. Shadow, obviously, does not know what Dooms Eye is talking about. At the end Shadow learns that he was originally created to stop Black Doom 50 years in the future. (present time in games) Black Doom then teleports his HQ, the Black Comet, to the surface of the Earth and becomes Devil Doom. Shadow goes Super and stops Devil Doom. He then teleports the Black Comet into space and blows it up with the eclipse cannon. (which apparently was repaired after it's destruction in Adventure 2)

Sonic Battle

Sonic Battle takes place after all of the above because they talk about Omega from Sonic heroes and Shadow has his memory.A robot made by an ancient civilization from 4000 years ago was unearthed by Gerald Robotnik and was lost. It was then found by Eggman who tried to use it as a weapon but it failed. Eggman throws it on emerald beach. (that was a stage in Adventure) Sonic finds him and teaches him how to fight. Eventually Emerl, which is what they named him, learns to talk like Sonic and his friends and copies their fighting styles. Everyone at one point in the game teach Emerl things. Eggman then tries to take him back seeing that he is working now. He defeats Eggman and then tries to destroy the planet because that is what he is designed to do. Sonic then destroys him and the game ends...odd ending isn't it.

Sonic Advance 3

Sonic Advance 3 closely follows the story of Sonic Battle because Eggman has found Emerl's remains and rebuilt him as Gemerl. Classic story line in this game. Eggman steals the chaos emeralds and tries to take over the planet.

Sonic Rush

This takes place after Sonic Advance 3 because it re-uses some elements introduced in that game, such as Cream's house and the Flickie's new look. This game takes place when Eggman's descendant, Eggman Nega, travels to the past to try to take over the world back then so it belongs to him in his present time. The future's princess, Blaze the Cat, who is also the guardian of the Sol Emeralds (future versions of the Chaos Emeralds, as realized by Knuckles in this game), follows Eggman Nega into the past, resulting in Blaze fainting. Eggman and Eggman N. soon team up to take over the world. Blaze wakes up, thinking she is in another dimension. Blaze and Sonic both try to stop the two antagonists, but also fight each other doing so. Blaze and Sonic soon form an alliance and set out to beat the two Eggmans.

Sonic the Hedgehog '06

In this game, Sonic has to save the Princess of Soleanna, Elise, from the wrath of Dr. Eggman, who once again wants the Chaos Emeralds, but also wants to uncover the secret behind the Flames of Disaster; however this game's events were erased from history at the end. That does not mean it did not happen though.

Sonic Rivals

This game has five different story lines so I am not going to explain. This game was after Sonic the Hedgehog '06 because Silver was re-introduced in this game. He was introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog '06 also. Eggman Nega came to Sonic's time line trying to take over by turning everyone into cards.

Sonic Rush Adventure

Sonic and Tails are flying in Tails' airplane, searching for a mysterious energy signal that appeared on Tails' radar. They decide to follow this mysterious energy signal, and head out over the ocean. As they travel farther and farther across the ocean, a sudden storm approaches and blows them far off course. Tails loses control of the plane in the storm, and the two heroes crash land over one of the islands.

Sonic Rivals 2

I don't know much about this game but i do know that the story involves eight rivals that must work together to find the missing Chao, and the one who is behind all of it.

SEGA and Bio Ware have decided to make an Sonic Game that's a turn based RPG. If you don't know what a turn based RPG is, good examples are Final Fantasy and Poke'mon. There are 11 playable characters in this game. Characters include; Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and many more.

I know what your thinking. "Turn based RPG? That's stupid." The creators of the game are keeping things that make the Sonic series fast so don't worry.

I've heard mixed thoughts about this game.

Sonic Unleashed.

This game came out for the Wii, Xbox 360, Ps2, and PS3. It was originally intended to be Sonic Adventure 3. Mainly played in behind view it occasionally switches to side scrolling view.

During one of Sonic's frequent adventures, he falls straight into Eggman's trap. Eggman drains the power from the seven chaos emeralds and shatters the continents into seven fragments. As a side affect Sonic is transformed into the hulking werewolf like state seen above. Sonic soon meets an interesting character named Chip who has lost his memory. Sonic and Chip set off to restore the shattered planet and Chip's memory.

Gameplay between the next gen systems (Xbox360, Ps3) is very different. The Wii and Ps2 versions are much simpler and somewhat downgraded. That is not a bad thing though. Those versions are just as fun.

It is easier to control so you dont break the speed. You know how because of the camera it didn't seem like you were going very fast? A special game engine was created to have the camera keep up at a realistic 300 mph!

A Sonic game similar to the Sonic and the Secret Rings because of Story. Sonic is in the mystical realm of King Arthur. King Arthur has become evil and ruling as the Black Knight. Sonic will need the help of a sword to save the kingdom.

Like Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonics friends will appear as characters from the tales of King Arthur.

You can do a number of swords techniques like for example, while moving around you quickly flick the Wii-mote to execute a sword slash to take out enemies in your way. There are many other sword tricks and attacks you can perform. you can plunge your sword into the wall and slow your decent. you can do a spinning buzz-saw airiel move. etc etc.

Sonic and the Black Knight uses the mission system like Sonic and the Secret Rings where you go back to certain points in a stage to go for a different objective.

Music will have a mix of Sonic and a celtic tune.

Shadow the hedgehog

Age: 50+ ageless (appears to be the same age as Sonic)

Shadow the hedgehog is the ultimate life form created by Prof. Gerald Robotnik to be his grand daughter, Maria Robotnik's, friend and an experiment to see if life and immortality could be created. Prof Gerald could not find the proper form for his experiment until he saw the hyrogliphics that depicted Super Sonic fighting Eggman on a pyramind wall.
One of the days after Gerald built the ultimate weapon, the Eclipse Cannon, G.U.N. came to Space colony ARK to stop him. Prof. Gerald was captured. Shadow and Maria where fleeing to the escape pods when the military caught up with them. Maria sacrificed herself to save Shadow by sealing him in the escape pod and launching him out of the colony, ARK. Right before the capsule was shot out, Maria was shot in front of Shadow by one of the G.U.N. solders.
Prof. Gerald, imprisoned and sentenced to death, reprogrammed Shadow's mind to be full of anger, to want revenge...
Shadow was released from the capsule 50 years later by the evil genius Dr. Eggman after hearing about Shadow being able to 'fill the world with destruction.'
After the events of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Shadow lost all memory of his past. Everything but his name and his powers where forgotten. Teaming up with Rouge and E-123 Omega, Shadow began looking for the answers to his past. After encountering a Shadow android Rouge asumed that Shadow was a robot as well. Everything about his past was unknown until the Black Coment passed by Earth as it has 50 years. Aliens from the comet ran amuck destorying everything. An alien appeared in front of Shadow saying how it was promised that Shadow was to gather the Chaos Emeralds and if he did, his past would be revealed. After Shadow gathered the Emeralds, he learned that Black Doom had helped Prof. Gerald create Shadow...
Shadow then finds out his real reason for being created...to stop Black Doom when he returned those 50 years after his creation.
After stopping Black Doom, Shadow thinks one last time about his past. He then lets go of it all with the words..."Sayonara...Shadow the Hedgehog..."

Shadow can harness the power of a chaos emerald with something called chaos control which can warp time and space to let him teleport. (he is actually moving so fast it seems like he teleporting.) He can use other moves like an explosion of energy called chaos blast, where the dome/explosion of energy expands out to a 20 yard radius around him. His other chaos moves are chaos spear and chaos lance. Shadow will also gain incredible amounts of power when taking off his gauntlets on his wrists, for they dampen his power.

Sonic the hedgehog

Age: 15

A super speedy hedgehog who loves adventure.

He will do anything for his friends.
Sonic is Shadow's biggest rival by far. Equal to Shadow's speed he is Shadow's perfect opponent. Although he can't use attacks like chaos spear, he can use chaos control, but it takes a lot out of his stamina whenever he does. He did manage to pull it off with a fake emerald before. Sonic gets through fights with his signature homing attack by jumping into the air and rushing at the opponent. He is not as strong as Shadow but he is his biggest rival.

Miles "Tails" Prower

Age: 8

Sonic's best friend this 8 year old, two tailed fox has an IQ of 300 equal to that of Dr. Eggman's. By rotating his twin tails he can fly. He also has a knack for building machines to aid sonic in battle.

Knuckles the Echinda

Age: 16

This red echidna is the guardian of the master emerald. he is also a friendly rival to a certain blue hedgehog. Knuckles, with his spiked fists, is a good fighter against eggman's henchmen and robots. Knuckles is from the same ancient tribe as Tikal the echidna.

Dr. Robotnik (Dr. Eggman)

Age: N/A

The Doctor has been trying to rule the world since the beginning. With an IQ of 300 he's always trying to build his eggutopia, Eggman-land, on Earth, but is always stopped by Sonic and the gang. He was been Sonic's arch-nemesis for years. The reason why Eggman is listed here in the character's page instead of the villains is because most of the time at the end of the games he helps the hero.

E-123 Omega

age: N/A

Omega is the last E-series robot the Dr. Eggman built. He was locked in a room with Shadow to stop anyone who tried to recover him. Rouge accidently activated Omega when she freed Shadow from a suspended animation capsule, but instead of attacking Rouge he mistook Shadow for an Eggman robot for he had gathered hate for Eggman because of what he did. He vowed his revenge on Eggman for locking him in the room. Ever since then he has stayed with Shadow as a member of Team Dark.

Rouge the Bat

Age: 18

Rouge the Bat is a professional treasure hunter just like Knuckles is. She likes to think that all of the worlds gems are hers for the taking. She is also one of G.U.N.'s top agents. In her first appearance, she was sent to Space Colony ARK to find out what Project Shadow was. Ever since working along side Shadow, she has become his closest friend, swearing that no matter what happens in the future, she will remain his friend.

Amy Rose

Age: 12

Amy Rose is always following Sonic where ever he goes. When Shadow was first released in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. She mistook him as Sonic. She carries with her a giant red and yellow hammer called the piko hammer. If anything gets in her way. She will crush it with her hammer. At the end of SA2B Shadow was looking out of the observation deck of the ARK. Amy came by complaining about how everyone always leaves her behind. She starts talking to Shadow and Shadow says how there is no hope for Earth. (the ARK is falling to Earth) She then coincidently says something that Maria Robotnik said a long time ago. Shadow then realizes that this is what she was talking about when Maria told him that her wish is that all people should have a chance. and he races off to help Sonic and Knuckles fight the bio lizard, leaving poor Amy alone and behind again...

Blaze the Cat
Age: 14

She is a princess and the defender of the Sol Emeralds, a role similar to that held by Knuckles. Blaze is the princess of her dimension.
She wears gloves similar to those worn by Sonic, only with fuzzy lining on the cuffs. Her shoes have the same look as Sonic's, but they also have fuzzy lining and are high-heeled. She also wears a purple coat, lined at the neck with gold and at the bottom with red, and a pair of white tights. She has ponytail, and a jewel-like red orb is present on her forehead.

Cream the Rabbit

Age: 6
Cream is a shy little rabbit who tries to make friends with everybody. She doesn't like fighting. With her always is her chao friend, Cheese. The two of them together makes the pair, Cream Cheese.

Silver the Hedgehog

Age: 14

Silver the Hedgehog appeared in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 06 looking for a beingcalled the Iblis Trigger.Silver has telekinetic abilities which he can use to move objects around him. He can also use these powers on himself to levitate in the air and zoom at high speeds. Silver may not be nearly as fast as Sonic or Shadow, his powers make up for it. Silver is capable of using Chaos Control. He has a strong sense on justice which leads him to go back in time to stop Iblis' release. This is also the reason he questions if killing someone to save the future is right. Super Forms

Many of the characters in the games have a super form. A super form is when someone uses the power of the chaos emeralds to gain incredible amounts of energy. There are some cases where it is not a chaos emerald that gives them super forms. Blaze uses the Sol Emeralds and Dark-Spines uses the world rings. Here are the characters that have a super form.

Tikal the Echidna

Age: 14 (16?)

Tikal is an Echinda from the same tribe as Knuckles. She was the Master Emerald guardian, like Knuckles, in the ancient times. Her father tried to use the power of the M.E. but was stopped by Chaos. She watched as Chaos destroyed everything on the planet and then locked him away in the M.E. with her spirit. When the Master Emerald was shattered. Chaos was released and so was Tikal. She helped Sonic and his friends fight against Chaos by bringing them to the past to see what happened to her world. Tikal is the one who first said:

"The servers are the seven Chaos. Chaos is power, power is enriched by the heart. The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos."

Big the Cat

Age: 20

Big the Cat is a fishing loving cat. He spends long days fishing with his pet/friend Froggy. When Froggy is kidnapped, he teams up with Amy Rose and Cream to try and save him. He is very protective of his friends. He uses his fishing rod as a fishing rod, (obvious) but he also uses it as a weapon. He carries around a large paper umbrella.

Espio is very serious, calm, and disciplined. He is very talented with computers and strongly dislikes Eggman. Since he is a ninja, he throws shuriken and kunai at enemies. The shuriken are oversized and are as big as him.

Vector the Crocodile (right)

Age: 20

Team leader, and brains of all dective operations. He will do anything for money as long as it's legal. Very strong and is very bad at singing...

Charmy Bee (front)

Age: 6

Charmy is very scatter brained and cannot focus. He loves goofing off. Since he is a child he would rather play than work. He has the ablility to somehow warp between giant robotic flowers.

Chip

Chip loses his memory when Sonic lands on him after he falls from Dr. Eggman's spaceship and follows Sonic on his adventure to help regain his memory (Later it's revealed that he actually lost his memory because he was awakened too early). Chip loves eating and always brings chocolate around with him, even offering some to those he thinks need it. Sonic even names him "Chip" for the chocolate chips on the ice cream he's eating at the time.

Chip and Dark Gaia are actually brothers.

Razor started combat with Phin-x until Shade saved him from an attack. Phin-x then showed his abillity of Chaos Control. He teleported behind Razor and impaled him through the back. Shade then starts to avenge Razor and enters rage mode. For an explaination of what Rage Mode is click here.

How to Draw

Ok...here's the deal...a couple people have been asking me to teach them how to draw. So I am going to start creating tutorials on my site and project: shadow. They take time to make so be patient.

Ok, so...

step 1: Draw exactly what it shows for starting shapes.

step 2: Start w/ the muzzle (part under his eyes) then do the eyes. next add spines in the shape of shark fins. Make sure they're blown back in the wind when he's running. same for the ears.

step 3: Next u actually make arms and legs. Connect them to the body. Do an outline for the hands and feet.

step 4: Last, erase all the lines u dont want and add the nose...be careful on that...

Nazo has his own page because he needs explaining. Nazo is supposedly a character that was to appear in the show Sonic X but never did. Many people have theories on what Nazo is but I like the theory that Chakra X of YouTube made. For more information on Nazo check out Nazo Unleashed. This is not Silver, many people have mistaken him for Silver the Hedgehog. All of Nazo's spines point up. Silver has a fluff of hair on the front of his head. See below to compare.

He is a red, teenage, anthropomorphic echidna, and while Sonic has large, spiky hair locks, Knuckles has red dreadlocks. He stands 110 cm (3 ft 7 in) and weighs 40 kg (88 lb).He also has a white crescent birthmark on his chest. His first game appearance was in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He was described as being 15 years old when he made his debut, but since Sonic Adventure, he is now given the age of 16.
Knuckles' name is derived from the four knuckles, two on each hand, which are actually sharp spikes. His task since birth has been to guard the Master Emerald, normally located on Angel Island. According to official Sonic Team polls, Knuckles is the fourth most popular character in the series behind tails, sonic, and shadow.
Games storyline
Knuckles lives on Angel Island which hovers in the sky thanks to the power of the Master Emerald, which he is charged with guarding.[citation needed] Knuckles is the last surviving member of the Echidna people who once inhabited the island. Due to his rather remote location and the fact that he rarely strays far from his duty, Knuckles is often alone, and as thus can be quite antisocial and distrusting, but on the other side, he is often quite gullible. One example of this gullibility is the belief that he held throughout Sonic the Hedgehog 3: that Sonic and Tails were attempting to steal the Master Emerald and that the infamous mad scientist Dr. Robotnik was trying to protect it. Dr. Robotnik, of course, had lied to Knuckles, and was planning on using the emerald to power his space station, the Death Egg. In the Hidden Palace Zone, Robotnik's betrayal was revealed to him very bluntly, in the form of electrocution. Knuckles then joined Sonic and Tails in their quest to stop the villain. Knuckles has been a (sometimes reluctant) friend to Sonic and Tails since then, sharing many of their adventures, getting tricked by Dr. Robotnik, and catching the thieving eye of a certain white bat named Rouge, who tries to steal the Master Emerald for herself (Sonic Adventure 2). Aside from appearances in the main Sonic series, Knuckles featured prominently in Knuckles Chaotix, a relatively unknown spin-off title developed for Sega 32X. The game also introduced Team Chaotix, a group of comical misfits. In Sonic & Knuckles/Sonic 3 & Knuckles/Knuckles in Sonic 2, Knuckles is able to use the Chaos Emeralds to go Super, changing into Super Knuckles. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, he is able to use the Super Emeralds to change into Hyper Knuckles. In Shadow the Hedgehog, he helps out in the Glyphic Canyon, Central City and Black Comet levels, and in the Black Comet Egg Dealer boss battle.
Fleetway storyline
Knuckles is a character in Fleetway's Sonic the Comic. Knuckles' DVD profile in the Sonic Anime, which incorrectly refers to him as a mole and correctly Sonic's best friend. In Sonic the Comic, Knuckles is depicted as (at first) being the last of his kind, and bears the burden of guarding the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds alone. When the Death Egg crashed on the island, Knuckles was briefly duped by Doctor Robotnik into believing Sonic was a dangerous villain who plotted to steal the Island's Chaos Emeralds. The echidna thus allowed Robotnik to place his Badnik armies on the island and also construct a Launch Base Zone to rebuild his Death Egg, and assisted him in fighting Sonic & stealing Sonic's own six Chaos Emeralds so they could be combined with Knuckles' into one set of Emeralds (the original state of the Chaos Emeralds). Knuckles, however, didn't trust Robotnik enough to tell him that he had the Grey Emerald (which could control the others), and when Robotnik tried to absorb the Emerald's power into himself, Knuckles used the Grey Emerald to defeat him. Knuckles spent the next few months destroying every trace of Robotnik's influence on the Floating Island, including the entire Carnival Night Zone, and assisted Sonic both when his secret base came under attack by a Badnik army and when Robotnik established a base in the Ice Cap Zone. Finally, the two heroes teamed up to destroy the Death Egg before it could launch - which they failed to do, and worse Knuckles had failed to stop Robotnik's Metallix from stealing the Master Emerald to power the Death Egg! While Sonic fought to retrieve the Emerald, Knuckles used ancient echidna technology to pilot the Floating Island and open fire on the Death Egg with Chaos Energy blasts, finally downing the craft. With the Master Emerald returned, Knuckles owed a debt to Sonic and, despite prefering privacy, agreed to hide the entire population of Emerald Hill Zone in the Mushroom Hill Zone to keep them safe from Robotnik's wrath. Whilst the arrangement was generally stress-free, the villagers swiftly demanded to be returned home when Robotnik was overthrown. In the story "The Homecoming", Knuckles discovered that a elderly, white-furred echidna named Dr. Zachary had appeared on the Floating Island. He claimed to be the first of the race to return to Mobius and was being pursued by a dangerous robot, but it turned out Zachary was evil & using the robot (in reality an ancient echidna Guardian Robot) as his minion. He had the robot destroy the Master Emerald and absorb its power, leaving the Island to crash while he destroyed Mobius, but Knuckles stopped him (using the robot's head as a brief substitute Emerald) Zachary apparently perished as he fell from the Island, but later returned, with a part-robot body, working for Robotnik. It was hinted that he knew where the echidnas had vanished to, but his story was left unfinished at the end of the comic. Knuckles retrieved a new Emerald from the echidna's Sacred Emerald Mines, which existed in a haunted graveyard. In doing so, he had to face the spirit of the Kohenyu, a race of Styrakosaurus' who were unwittingly hunted to extinction by the echidnas, and take responsibility for their death. He then was roped into helping Captain Plunder and his Sky Pirates launch a heist on an alien galleon, in return for a chest of ancient echidna documents that could help him with the Island's ancient computer systems. Knuckles trekked across Mobius with the chest, fighting the occassional villain as he went, before finally returning to the Island to battle Robotnik & a cyborg Zachary's attempt to turn the Emerald Hill refugees into an organic computer. When Robotnik was overthrown, Knuckles spent his days with Porker Lewis trying to uncover the mysteries of his lost people, occassionally being drawn into battle against such foes as a D.R.A.T.-affiliated heist team and a Chaos-charged Robotnik. Knuckles left his island to save lives from the environmental collapse of Mobius, when Robotnik tried to drain the planet's life force. Soon after that (in STC's last story), the Floating Island came under attack by the terrifying Chaos creature and Knuckles was forced to stop it absorbing the Chaos Emeralds by scattering them to the four corners of Mobius - dooming the island in the process. He was left distraught and had to be forcibly evacuated from the island, and joined up with the Freedom Fighters to stop Chaos & retrieve the Emeralds. Knuckles is also one of the few to know of Tails' legendary status in the Nameless Zone, a fact he became aware of when he followed Tails through a portal mistakenly believing the young fox was being kidnapped. The Nameless Zone residents came to the conclusion that Knuckles was actually Sonic, whom Tails had claimed was his sidekick. Far from blowing Tails' cover, Knuckles was delighted to meet people who didn't worship his rival and played along, assisting him in defeating the terrifying Trogg once and for all. The last STC storyline revealed that the ancient echidnas had been at war with the alien Drakon Empire, who invented the Chaos Emeralds; Knuckles was alive back then and served as the leader of the echidna's army. It is presumed by Sonic that Knuckles was placed in suspended animation for unknown reasons and lost his memory. Nigel Kitching's original plan was to reveal that the outcome of the war was that the Drakons were driven back but the only surviving echidnas were Drakon slaves scattered across the Empire (and that Zachary was one of these echidnas).
Archie storyline
Knuckles' Past
Knuckles initially lived alone, his objective in life being to protect Angel Island and safeguard the Chaos Emerald, until he learned of his noble heritage and the whereabouts of his people. His place in life was established centuries before his birth, as a descendant from Edmund who was the first Guardian. This continuity was the first to talk about Knuckles' relatives, introducing a group made up of his ancestors known as the Brotherhood of Guardians. Knuckles' father, Locke of the House of Edmund, married Lara-Le from the House of Arian. After Knuckles was born, and without the knowledge or consent from his wife, Locke subjected Knuckles' egg to large doses of Chaos radiation in order to create a guardian that surpassed the abilities achieved by his ancestors. After Knuckles hatched from his egg, he quickly sported intellect and abilities that were very abnormal in children his age. Locke wanted to begin Knuckles' training as guardian at three, but Lara-Le didn't want Knuckles to be raised this way, and the dispute ended their marriage. Locke won custody of Knuckles when he was five, and retreated to the Floating Island. Like his childhood friend Princess Sally Acorn, Knuckles would be to an extent secluded as a child, learning history, mathematics, geography, sciences, and other issues a guardian would need to know in order to perform his job effectively. When Knuckles was ten, Locke journeyed to the Forbidden Zone with the confidence that Knuckles could be the next guardian. Locke then joined the Brotherhood in Haven.
Present
Years later, Knuckles became the Guardian his father hoped for. With Princess Sally no longer able to see Knuckles now that Robotnik took over her father's city, his only friend would be the cockatoo Catweazle. Later on he became friends with Vector, Espio, Mighty, and Charmy-- soon to be members of the Chaotix. He was also mentored by Archimedes the fire ant since Guardians had previously relied on fire ants for this purpose. The Guardian eventually met Sonic the Hedgehog, with whom he formed a rivalry that gradually became mutual respect and friendship. Knuckles later found confrontation with Enerjak, who would turn out to be Dimitri, his great-great-great uncle. Later, Knuckles found himself confronted by the Dark Legion, a group founded by Dimitri's descendants, including his rival Kragok and female arch-nemesis Lien-Da. In addition, he found himself facing such challenges as going through Roboticization to battle Mecha Sonic and being set the task of recovering the Sword of Acorns. During the latter, he unknowingly met a relative of his friend Tails in the form of Merlin Prower. Since then, Echidnaopolis was restored to the Floating Island. Knuckles then learned of his ancestry, reunited with family, and still struggled with his personal life. He had to bear the weight of being a living Chaos Emerald, not to mention being part of a prophecy that said he was destined to help save the world, while trying to be a normal guy. His time was occupied with quests and battles, among them numerous confrontations with the Dark Legion, taking over as Mitre of the Lost Tribe of Echidnas from his great-grandfather Athair, joining Sonic and Tails in a battle against Mammoth Mogul-which led to the creation of the Master Emerald, replacing the Chaos Emeralds that had originally been used to keep Angel Island aloft-and fighting the Overlander known as Hunter. Knuckles was then forced to deal with the disappearance of Echidnaopolis' population, a result of a discharge from the Dark Legion's Quantum Beam. Knuckles later undertook an evolution that changed his pigment and awakened greater powers, becoming the functionally omnipotent Chaos Knuckles. Using his new power, he joined forces with the Dark Legion in several efforts to alter history. After failing, he used his power to reverse the effects of the Quantum Beam himself. He died in a battle against Mammoth Mogul to protect his former enemy Dimitri, and then later came back to life after rejecting the ability to become one with the Chaos Force. Because of this, Knuckles lost his powers after he thwarted an earthquake on the battlegrounds with the Xorda. This confirmed his legendary status, as according to the prophecy of the Ancient Walkers, the Avatar (aka Knuckles) would bypass death and deliver the world from its suffering. After Rebirth After the battle with the Xorda and Sonic's transportation to the other side of the galaxy, Dr. Eggman was able to take over Angel Island and backed the oppressive Dingo regime. Because of this, Knuckles was not allowed to return to Angel Island for a long after Robotnik seized control of it, until Knuckles eventually gained the approval to go back from Sally after Sonic's return. In the heat of the ensuing battle, Knuckles regained his powers and the people praised him as the Avatar. After realizing that the rest of the world suffered like his people, Knuckles gained the will to extend his services beyond the Angel Island, much to the disapproval of his father Locke. Since that time, Knuckles and the Chaotix have lived in Knothole, working together with the Freedom Fighters. This choice resulted in Knuckles becoming involved in battles against the likes of the Destructix and Ixis Naugus. He also accompanied Sonic, Tails, and Merlin to the Bem homeworld of Argentium to rescue Tails' parents Amadeus and Rosemary Prower, and thus was among the first Mobians to learn of the threat posed by the Black Arms, a warlike race of aliens who had visited Mobius once and were likely to return at any time. Locke approached Knuckles again sometime before the Argentium mission, arguing with him to return to his duties as Guardian of Angel Island. From this conversation, Knuckles learned that the Echidnas were still threatened by the Dingoes under General Kage and that the Dark Legion had been split into civil war, with the two factions led by Lien-Da and an Echidna resembling his late nemesis Kragok, though the latter appears to actually be his old ally Remington, who is Kragok's biological son. Despite this information, he refused to return to the island, feeling that his responsibility to Mobius as a whole was greater. Unknowingly, he left an opening for Dr. Finitevus, who convinced Locke to entrust Angel Island to his care and that of the Destructix while he went to look for the missing Brotherhood of Guardians. Locke had no way of knowing Finitevus' true intent: to recreate Enerjak using the energy contained within the Emerald. When Sonic was implanted with a remote control device that forced him to act against his will on Robotnik's orders, Knuckles was responsible for subduing him and destroying the device. Since it was located in Sonic's ear, Knuckles solved the problem with an uppercut, though Sally later admonished him for the potentially lethal tactic. Not long afterwards, Knuckles held off Snively Kintobor while Sonic helped Shadow the Hedgehog search Gerald Robotnik's journal for answers to his past, a quest that Knuckles deeply sympathized with. Knuckles then became the only member of the Chaotix to avoid capture by Eggman's forces when Knothole came under attack by the villain's Egg Fleet. With the help of Sonic, Tails, Amy Rose, and NICOLE, he was able to quickly liberate his comrades from their Egg Grape Chamber prison and transport them to a new home. Knuckles wasn't in the city of New Mobotropolis long, however, leaving the city on his own and heading to Angel Island just before Tails' parents began their reformist revolution. Despite Julie-Su's protests, he claimed that New Mobotropolis' need for his help wasn't urgent and that it would be a good time to patch up things with his father and help Locke out with the Echidnas.

Time as Enerjak Knuckles disappeared during this mission, a circumstance made more ominous by Enerjak's return. Upon arriving on Angel Island, Knuckles was beaten and taken captive by the Destructix and Scourge the Hedgehog, who delivered him to Dr. Finitevus, Lien-Da, and his old friend Remington (who not only didn't recognize Knuckles, but who had taken over as Grandmaster of the Frost Legion after learning of his origin as the son of Knuckles' old rival, Kragok). After Finitevus informed Knuckles that 90% of the Echidna people had been killed by Robotnik, Knuckles drew the powers of the Master Emerald into himself, setting off a brainwashing spell trap set by Finitevus, and transformed into a new-and-improved Enerjak. Using his newfound powers, he banished the Dingoes to Sandopolis, restored the Dark Legionnaires to their normal forms-including Remington's lost memories-and sent all the Echidnas but Lien-Da and a few loyalists to Albion. Teleporting to New Mobotropolis, he easily overcame NICOLE's forcefield and confronted the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix. It was only when Julie-Su, heartbroken and vengeful, tried to attack him and avenge Knuckles, whom she believed dead, that Enerjak removed his helmet to reveal himself as Knuckles, to the horror and shock of all his friends, Julie-Su and particularly his mentor Archimedes, who had witnessed the horrible events leading up to his transformation. As his friends tried to come to grips with Knuckles' change, the new Enerjak revealed his plan to rid Mobius of technology and bring peace once and for all to the planet. When his friends tried to convince him that he wasn't acting like himself, and that his methods were far too extreme, he attempted to undo Julie-Su's cybernetics just as he had those of the Dark Legion, only to come under attack from the returning Sonic. After this surprise attack, Sonic was not able to match Knuckles at all, at which point Shadow, GUN's newest agent arrived and fought Enerjak alone after removing his power inhibitors. Though Shadow was able to match Enerjak's might, he could not keep such a monumental effort up and soon tired. As Enerjak seemed to have the upper hand, Dr. Eggman arrived and teleported Enerjak away to his new Egg Grapes, made specifically to contain Enerjak. Knuckles' situation was made even more grim when his father, abducting Julie-Su and Sonic for the purpose of enlisting their aid, revealed that he couldn't undo Finitevus' spell on his son, and that his solution to defeating Enerjak was to use a Brotherhood-made weapon...to kill him. Robotnik's modifications to the Egg Fleet proved faulty very quickly: immediately upon recovering from the shock of being transported, Knuckles broke free of his prison and proceeded to lay waste to New Megaopolis. Easily wiping out Robotnik's ground forces, Enerjak then struck a final blow by turning the missiles of the Egg Fleet back against them, destroying them utterly. While Robotnik fled to safety, Enerjak returned to Angel Island in order to recover after losing a great deal of power. Seeking Dr. Finitevus, he commanded his "benefactor" to replenish his power, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Sonic, who had just destroyed the weapon Locke had been attempting to recover. Leaping atop the Master Emerald, Sonic drew power from it, and Finitevus stopped Enerjak from attacking him as he became Super Sonic; the doctor was apparently pleased as he saw his own corrupted energy neutralized by Sonic's power. The battle began in earnest as Super Sonic attempted to break Knuckles free by taunting him, goading him with the usual banter between them. Unfortunately, Finitevus' magic proved too strong, and Knuckles continued to attack his former friend. Meanwhile, back on Angel Island's surface, Finitevus revealed to Julie-Su that he had "locked" his hex by making it so that it could only be broken by someone sacrificing their own life. Julie-Su and Archimedes were both willing, but it was Locke who stepped in to save his son. Returned to normal, Knuckles found his father dead and in a rage attacked Dr. Finitevus, eager to punish him for all his crimes. The mad doctor escaped, and Knuckles, motivated most likely by guilt at having lost his father because of his past decisions, swore that he would remain on Angel Island to guard the Master Emerald-for the rest of his life. Returning to the Team Knuckles was soon talked out of his course of action by Rouge the Bat, who found him sulking as he observed the Chaotix at work building a bridge between the new Shrine Isle-the Master Emerald Shrine on its own small island-and the mainland of Angel Island. Having just flown over Albion and visited General Helmut Von Stryker amongst the Dingoes, Knuckles' feelings of guilt had increased to the point where he felt his people were better off in Albion, where they would be safe from him. Rouge quickly antagonized his decision to take up the old Guardian traditions, pointing out that they had resulted in the apparent destruction of the Brotherhood and that he had no way of knowing how things would have turned out had he remained on Angel Island instead of fighting on the surface. She also pointed out that with the Warp Ring Locke had passed to Julie-Su, who in turn had passed it to him, he could move back and forth between the fight with Robotnik and Angel Island, fulfilling both his obligations. Thus assuaged, Knuckles happily rejoined the Chaotix, unaware that Rouge only motivated him to do so in her own interests.
Possible Futures
A variety of Knuckles from alternate futures also exist. These include a future where Knuckles apparently gives rise to a race of mechanical Echidnas called Brass Knuckles, who later menace the Freedom Fighters of the Galaxy. Another future Knuckles is one who goes insane after absorbing a massive amount of Chaos energy and becomes leader of the Dark Legion. In order to protect their daughter Lara-Su from the knowledge of what her father had become, Julie-Su told her that Knuckles had been killed by Constable Remington. After Lara-Su traveled back in time and tried to thwart the alleged assassination, her mother revealed to her the true fate of her father. The main future Knuckles appears in Mobius: 25 Years Later. This Knuckles is a powerful political figure in his role as Guardian, and is paired with Julie-Su. Due to their shared opinion that commitment matters more than ceremony, the two are not officially married, but have a daughter named Lara-Su. In this future, Knuckles and Sonic have had some bad shared history, leading to repeated disputes between them. Among these is an incident where, after becoming Chaos Knuckles once more, Knuckles attempted to remake Mobius as he saw fit following his defeat of Dr. Eggman. Before he could carry out his plan in full, Sonic stopped him with an alien device, thus robbing Knuckles of his right eye. Refusing to have it replaced with a cloned organ citing religious beliefs, Knuckles instead had a cybernetic right eye implanted that allows him to see in all spectrums. Together with Sonic, Knuckles was brought into the confidence of Rotor and Cobar, who discovered the imminent collapse of Mobius' timeline. Putting aside their differences, Knuckles and Sonic agreed to work together in hopes of saving their shared planet. Before setting out on this mission, Knuckles granted his daughter Lara-Su's request to become the next Guardian, something he had refused for some time beforehand. This decision resulted from the realization that he was giving Lara as little choice over being a Guardian as his late father Locke had given him. However, Lara sneaked aboard his transport, and when Sonic was sent into the past using the Tachyon Displacement chamber, Lara-Su disappeared as well. In the alternate Mobius: 25 Years Later, Knuckles retains his memories of the original timeline due to having been next to the Tachyon Displacement Chamber when it went off. This time around, Knuckles became chief enforcer to Shadow the Hedgehog, who became the despotic ruler of Mobius. Among his assignments were capturing not only the returning Lara-Su and Sonic, but also Tails. Held captive, the trio had to convince Knuckles that Shadow's rule was not the best thing for Mobius. Knuckles soon revealed to the three, and Rotor, that he didn't take them prisoner for real, and that he had planned the fake arrest from the very beginning so that he, Tails, Lara-Su and Sonic could rebel against King Shadow together. The plan went off flawlessly.
Personality

Knuckles is honest, independent, headstrong, devoted to his duty and often gullible. He is very serious and usually likes to be by himself, but can be relied upon to help out whenever the planet needs saving. In all versions of the Sonic universe Knuckles has a rivalry in some form with Sonic. He appears to be jealous of his independent nature and freedom.[4] Knuckles being easily tricked into believing Sonic is the bad guy has become a recurring theme in the Sonic universe, even to the point of being a running gag (particularly when Sonic shouts, "Way to go, Knucklehead!", or, "You let Eggman trick you again?!") Knuckles' personality varies, depending on the universe - the Knuckles of the Sega games is extremely stubborn and is loyal to his duty, although he does go with Sonic and company to save the world far more often than his counterparts in other continuities. He is easily fooled into walking into traps. Knuckles is said to be shy around women in his bio in Sonic Jam,[citation needed] which is not consistent with the new games, but can be backed up by the way he acts awkwardly around girls like Amy, Blaze and especially Rouge.[citation needed] In Sonic Adventure 2, he claims that he is not scared of ghosts before the level, Pumpkin Hill, but before fighting King Boom Boo he reveals his true fear. The Knuckles of the Sonic Anime is a devoted treasure hunter (perhaps because there are no Chaos Emeralds involved in the story), almost carefree and quite goofy at times. He is said to be Sonic's best friend, but he's still more serious than Sonic and he knows his priorities.[citation needed] The Knuckles of Archie Comics is the devoted Guardian of the Master Emerald, and though he is more sulky, he is also perhaps more talkative and sarcastic as he isn't a social loner like his other depictions. [citation needed] The Knuckles of Fleetway is even more devoted to his duty as a Guardian, to the point of an obsession. He finds Sonic's enhanced ego slightly obnoxious, and is an extreme loner. He is quicker to anger, slow to trust and slightly less gullible than usual. He guards not only the Master Emerald, but also the Chaos Emeralds.[citation needed] The Knuckles of Sonic X gets mad very easily, but is slightly less stubborn than other incarnations and tends to give in to situations when others gang up on him. He is probably the most gullible of the versions of Knuckles, perhaps for the comedy factor involved in Sonic X. Perhaps he focuses less on his duty as a Guardian, but in the first season of the show Angel Island wasn't around to protect anyway. Knuckles spent the majority of the first season travelling on his own, resulting in a lack of screen time. Though during this season, there was at least one episode which focused on Knuckles, as the primary character, in a small side-story in which he ultimately gained possession of a Chaos Emerald (more specifically the red one, a possible pun of Knuckles' own body color). He also likes cheese and crackers.
With non-game characters
Like Sonic, Knuckles has had a history of girlfriend relationships outside the game-related continuities. In the Archie Comic, Knuckles fell for a female Echidna named Julie-Su because both were destined for one another, though for a time he also showed romantic inclination towards Sally Acorn. In the comic's alternative M25YL storyline, Knuckles and Julie Su are together (not married as both characters don't believe in cermonies to prove their commitment to each other) and have a child, Lara Su (though this is stressed to be a possible or alternate future in the comic, see Alternate Selves below). In the Sonic Underground TV series, Knuckles showed interest in Sonic's sister, Sonia the Hedgehog. Also, in the Sonic Anime, Sara is rumoured to be in love with Knuckles, as once he saves her from death, she says "Thank you Mr. Mole!" (a goof is that Knuckles is called a mole in the movie) and kisses him. In the Sonic the Hedgehog Anime movie, Tails asks Knuckles if he will stop a river of magma from destroying the arctic caps, but Knuckles hesitates. Sara says "Would you do it for me, brave boy?" and gives him a kiss. Knuckles blushes and yells "YES, MA'AM!", then he goes off.
Abilities
Knuckles is the physically strongest character in the series and overall one of the strongest. His practically monstrous strength enables him to perform amazing feats such as punching holes right through thick steel, shatter boulders to smithereens and lift objects many times his own size and weight. His super strength seems to lie in his upper body, particularly in his arms and hands (or fists). He also possess near-maximized endurance; capable of taking some major punishment. Knuckles' can also attack with Fire Punches, as shown in the games Sonic Advance 1, 2, and 3, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes and Sonic Battle (However, in Sonic Adventure 2, Knuckles needs the Hammer Gloves to attack with Fire Punches). He is also shown to be very fast on his feet, but still not quite as fast as Sonic or Shadow. Unlike the hedgehogs, however, Knuckles can swim. He can glide in the air by apparently trapping air under his dreadlocks, and so far he is the only one who knows how to access and utilize the powers of the Master Emerald, other than Tikal the Echidna. He can also sense the Chaos Emeralds from a distance. Knuckles is also a proficient burrower, able to dig into any wall or floor. Like Sonic and Shadow, Knuckles can power up into Super Knuckles using the Chaos Emeralds or the Master Emerald. Super Knuckles has a pale hot pink colour and, as speculated by some fans, longer dreadlocks. Also Knuckles has achieved the ability to access the force known as "The Power of Chaos", allowing him to perform Chaos-based abilities without the use of any emeralds. In "Sonic's Evil Twin", like Manic, Knuckles plays the drums. He can twirl his sticks with his hands, twirl both sticks in his right hand, and throw them in the air and catch them like most drummers do. His sticks are small and bend. His drumset can control the earth, creating seismic activity under his direction. His cymbals can even reflect laser fire.
Game-specific abilities
In Sonic Adventure, Knuckles can use the Maximum Heat Attack to do a punching version of Sonic's Light Speed Attack. In Sonic & Knuckles/Sonic 3 & Knuckles/Knuckles in Sonic 2, Knuckles does not have the ability to jump quite as high as Sonic or Tails. This is extremely apparent if the level select code is successfully used to play as Knuckles in the Sonic & Knuckles version of Death Egg Zone, which is normally only accessible to Sonic and Tails. Knuckles can only clear the level through use of the debug code. In Sonic Heroes, Knuckles can use a move called Fire Dunk in which he uses Sonic and Tails as fire balls to destroy their enemies. In Sonic Heroes, Knuckles can slam the ground and kick up tremors to attack enemies. The range and power increases as Knuckles collects energy cores. At Level 3, Knuckles can kick up a small volcanic eruption, spewing fireballs at all enemies. Knuckles can use the mystic melody which causes something to happen when played in front of a certain kind of object (but in Sonic Adventure 2, so can everyone else). In the game Sonic Riders Knuckles is a power-type character, and can bash his way through certain obstacles. When someone gets near him, or he catches up to them, he punches the opponent in one of two different ways - one being a normal punch and the other being one that leaves opponents in a screw form for a second or two. In Sonic the Fighters Knuckles can activate the Knuckles special where he spins around the opponent and punches them until they fall. In Sonic & Knuckles, Knuckles has the ability to glide as his hair puffs out and catches the air. This move reappears in Sonic Heroes under the name of 'Triangle Dive'. Knuckles holds onto Sonic and Tails, gliding with his dreadlocks. Using this move and huge fans, it is possible to go up instead of floating down. In the 2P Battle Mode in Sonic Adventure 2, collecting 20 rings allows him to punch the ground and stun the opponent. Collecting 40 rings allows him to utilize a move known as the Thunder Arrow, which shocks the opponent and makes them dizzy. Finally, 60 rings allows him to do a move called Power Flash and the opponent can't move for 10 or 20 seconds.
Transformations
Like Sonic and Shadow, Knuckles has the ability to power up using the Chaos Emeralds and become Super Knuckles, and he can also use the Super Emeralds from Sonic 3 & Knuckles and become Hyper Knuckles. As both he is in a hot pink form, an indication of his power increasing. Like Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles has an after image effect. When he moves, there appears to be 3 of him. Knuckles is also thought to have not turned into Super Knuckles in Sonic Heroes because instead of a true super aura he only had a super shield involving him, similar to Super Sonic's appearance in Sonic Adventure. When Knuckles is in a Super form, he gains invincibility and all his powers and natural abilities are enhanced up to their full limit. Super Knuckles can run a hundred times as fast, is a hundred times more powerful, and can climb walls twice as fast and fly. In the final battle of Sonic Heroes, Super Knuckles could also shoot Fire Balls from his fists. As Hyper Knuckles, he can destroy all on-screen enemies by gliding into a wall, causing the stage to shake. He also had the ability to fly at a fast speed without staying in the air long enough to reach the speed when he is normal. Hyper Knuckles is also incapable of drowning. In the Archie Comics, Knuckles can use 7 Chaos Emeralds to turn into Hyper Knuckles, and use the Master Emerald to turn into Super Knuckles. (In Sonic the Hedgehog #141, the term "Hyper Knuckles" for his first transformation was scrapped in favor of "Super Knuckles", which correlates with the naming convention used by the games.) As both, Knuckles appears in a hot pink form, and Super Knuckles has the same powers he has in the games. Also, before his death, Knuckles was also able to turn into a green-colored Chaos Knuckles. Chaos Knuckles was incredibly powerful, he had all kinds of Chaos powers and he overloaded two Chaos syphons. His Chaos powers included Chaos Blast, the full limit of Chaos Control, healing ability, mind control and several others. This was Knuckles' most powerful form, but he lost this power when he came back from death. Chaos Knuckles was the most powerful Chaos entity on Mobius when he appeared. Another abnormality in Chaos Knuckles was that his form was permananent, and Knuckles would have remained in that state if not for his death.

Miles Prower, better known by his nickname Tails is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series of video games, comics, and animated cartoons released by Sega. The name "Miles Prower" is a pun on "miles per hour", a reference to the famed speed of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, as well as the character's incredible skill as a mechanic. He is a young (temperarly adolescent), male, golden yellow fox with light blue eyes, white fluffy fur muzzle, inner ears and stomach/chest and two large fluffy white-tailed tails (similar to the mythological kitsune, which was often depicted with nine), hence the nickname, which enable him to fly and propel himself forward at high speeds by spinning them in a helicopter-like motion. He wears red and white shoes with gray soles, white socks with an additional set of dark gray ringlets fastening them to the shoes and white gloves with thick, sock-like gloved fastened with a black metal ringlet. He has three small, bent, long and smooth tuft of fur acts as a 'fringe' on his forehead. According to Sega Japan's Web site (which is canon), he is 8 years old (now given to be 9 in the TV Series or sometimes adolescent), stands at 80 centimeters (approx. 2 ft 7.5 in), and weighs 20 kilograms (44 lbs). His birthday is November 24 1998, the release date of the Sega Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992. He is short, slim and lightweight, but he has to have some sort of muscle somewhere in order to keep up with Sonic. During his first appearance, his skin was an orange color, but the color was changed to yellow-orange for Sonic Adventure, and light-yellow for Sonic Heroes. In 1993 and 1995 he starred in his own games, Tails and the Music Maker for the Pico and Tails Adventure and Tails' Skypatrol for the Game Gear. However in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, his fur was brown while in SatAM, it was dark orange.
History
Tails lived on Westside Island, and when Sonic arrived in The Tornado, he instantly became his idol when he first witnessed Sonic's incredible speed. After Sonic saw that the fox was actually able to catch up with him, he decided to let him tag along (everyone needs a fanboy, right?). Being a mechanics buff, Tails took the time to look over Sonic's plane when he had gone away. However, around the same time, Eggman began demonstrating the power of his spacestation, the Death Egg, close by. Tails was more than willing to help stop Eggman, effectively teaming up with Sonic. They've been a partnership ever since.
Character design
Yasushi Yamaguchi, originally the main artist and zone designer for Sega's Sonic Team, designed Tails for an internal competition for a sidekick to the speedy hedgehog. His entry won, but Sonic Team decided to change his character's name from "Miles" to "Tails". Yamaguchi ended up with a compromise. He snuck the name "Miles" in as his legal name; "Tails" would be his nickname, ending up with the full name of Miles "Tails" Prower. Tails was redesigned (along with all of the other Sonic characters) by Yuji Uekawa for Sonic Adventure. His fur changed color to a slightly orange shade of yellow, and he gained visible light blue irises. In the American and UK comics, he was originally a brownish color, but Archie eventually decided to change this to match his in-game appearance. In the anime series Sonic X, Tails is almost identical to his current game design, though he appears to have a round belly in some episodes.
Video game appearances
First Appearances
Tails was first seen on Sonic 2 for the Master System, where he was kidnapped by Robotnik for ransom. He was first made playable in the Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where he played the part of Sonic's sidekick and also as a playable character from the second controller, or could be chosen as player one. Sonic Chaos (1993), on the Game Gear/Master System was the second game where the player could control Tails. Then, in Sonic 3 (1994) Tails made his third major appearance, this time able to pick up Sonic when possible. This was a big step forward for Tails; he became much better known and respected at this point for his usefulness.
Solo Appearances
Tails starred in his first solo role in Tails' Skypatrol (1995), which was a sort of puzzle game on the Game Gear. This was followed by Tails Adventure later the same year, which was a Metroid-esque platformer with RPG elements. Tails was the star of Tails and the Music Maker for the Sega Pico.
Secular Appearances
He found himself in the ring for the arcade game Sonic the Fighters, which was later ported to the Gamecube via Sonic Gems Collection. In this fighting game, he can fly into enemies, spin dash and punch rapidly. He is the fifth character the player fights in the story mode, and his stage is "Canyon Cruise", which takes place on a boat. The fox was also a playable character in Sonic R (1997) for the Sega Saturn. He had good turning and could take shortcuts with his flying ability, but wasn't very fast. In Sonic Adventure and its remake, Sonic Adventure DX, Tails was one of the six playable characters. His gameplay was standard platforming stages; the goal of each stage was to destroy the capsule or get to the Chaos Emerald before Sonic or Dr. Eggman. However, in the sequel, Sonic Adventure 2 and its remake, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, he was featured in third-person shooting segments, seated in his "Cyclone" mech, not counting his Chao Garden appearances where he performed as he did in Sonic Adventure. Tails was also a playable character in the Game Boy Advance series Sonic Advance. He could fight offensively with his tails, along with jumping, flying and using the Spin Dash. In Shadow the Hedgehog, he helps Shadow out in the Circus Park and Air Fleet levels, and can be played using the second controller in the GameCube version. He shows the ability to use Sonic's Homing Attack in this game, but cannot fly. Tails was also in Sonic Battle for the Game Boy Advance. His story was second in the main mode. His specials included firing electrical energy with an arm cannon, setting "Chu2" bombs that seek out their target and causing a giant hand to appear and attack. His flying ability is present but very dumbed down, but it is made up with the fact that Tails has one of the best healing abilities in the game. Sonic Rush on the Nintendo DS featured Tails as a playable supporting character as well as in Sonic Rush Adventure, but in Sonic Rush 3, Shadow replaced him since he is playable with Sonic and Knuckles. In Sonic Riders, Tails is a playable character, and one of the main characters of the game. He modified Sonic's Extreme Gear "Blue Star" to become "Blue Star 2", and rides a board called the "Yellow Tail". Wave the Swallow makes fun of his board design, sparking a rivalry between them throughout the game. When racing, he has the best cornering of all characters, and fights with a giant electrical plug. He will also be playable in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. In Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, Tails is a playable character. He and Knuckles are amigo characters for Sonic. In Sonic Rivals, Tails appears in Sonic's storyline as a cameo appearance. When both him and Sonic the Hedgehog head over to the mysterious Onyx Island, they discover that Amy has been turned into a card by Dr. Eggman himself! When Sonic doubts Dr. Eggman, Sonic gets front-row seats to seeing Tails also get turned into a card! Sonic sets off to rescue the two as other rivals, Knuckles the Echidna, Silver the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Metal Sonic get into the mix as they all head on a search for Eggman. Tails also appears as three collectable cards in the game. He will be playable in Sonic Rivals 2. In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Tails is one of the 16 playable characters (8 being from Sonic's universe) as a Skill-type character. In Sonic and the Secret Rings, Tails is a playable character in Party Mode, but during the main story play he acts as a guide, with his likeness used for Ali Baba in place of Tails himself. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he is a Green Hill Zone cameo.
Other Appearances
It has been confirmed that in the unreleased Sonic X-treme, which was in development for the Sega Saturn platform, Tails would have appeared, playing in a first person flight mode. Sonic CD only contains Tails in the form of a piece of artwork that features him standing next to a racecar with the caption "SEE YOU NEXT GAME" - a reference to Sonic Drift for the Game Gear.
Gameplay quirks
In Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure, when the player has opted to play in 'Sonic and Tails' mode (controlling Sonic while the AI makes Tails follow him), it's not readily stated in the manual, but a second player can use the 2P controller to use Tails. The action will continue to follow Sonic on the screen, making him the focal point, but Tails is fully controllable in every way that he is when playing as Tails alone. This can potentially be exploited by players who are having trouble with some problem areas or bosses, as Tails has the benefit of being completely invulnerable, with any "death" he suffers being quickly resolved as the character flies harmlessly back onto the screen after a few seconds. Moreover, in Sonic 3, Tails is granted the ability to fly as he pleases, which can allow the Tails-using player to airlift Sonic wherever he might need to go, though Tails does have an endurance limit to his flight. Sonic Advance allowed this mode as well (via a code entered at character select), however, Tails couldn't be controlled by a second player this time. In the GameCube version of Shadow the Hedgehog, all non-hovering characters, including Tails, could be controlled with the second controller.
Personality
Tails was very shy when he first met Sonic the Hedgehog, but gradually opened up and became Sonic's best friend. Before he met Sonic, In Tail's Adventure, he saved an entire island from the brink of destruction caused by the battle kukku army. He also battled various villains in "Tails Sky Patrol" such as the main villain WitchCart. In Sonic Adventure, Tails saved Station Square from Dr. Eggman without Sonic's help. He now has many different creations and his intelligence matches Doctor Robotnik's. He does have a few weaknesses though; he is very afraid of lightning and has a tendency to talk too much, which frequently causes him to accidentally blab out secrets or plans (for example, in Sonic Adventure 2, without thinking at first, he told Eggman that the Emerald Sonic had was a fake, thus ruining the heroes plans). He also has a tendency to talk technobabble. In the Archie Comics, the other Freedom Fighters take care of the fox, him being too young to do much. However, over time he grows up to become a valuable team member.
As a sidekick
The Japanese and western manuals differ somewhat in the story of how the two first met. In the Japanese manual, Tails lived on Westside Island, which Sonic arrived at shortly after Sonic the Hedgehog in his biplane, the Tornado. Sonic instantly became Tails' idol when the fox first witnessed the blue hedgehog's incredible speed. After Sonic saw that Tails was actually able to catch up with him, he decided to let him tag along (this scene can be witnessed in Sonic Adventure in a flashback during Tails' story). Being a mechanics buff, Tails took the time to look over Sonic's plane when he had gone away. However, around the same time, Dr. Eggman (or "Robotnik") began demonstrating the power of his spacestation, the Death Egg. Tails was more than willing to help stop Eggman, effectively teaming up with Sonic. The added details about his mechanical abilities explain why Tails was so quick with repairs while Sonic fought his way through the Wing Fortress Zone, and have since been referenced in later titles such as Sonic Adventure where he made a much faster, more well equipped plane, the Tornado II, to replace the old one. According to the western manual, Sonic had been Tails' hero ever since he was a baby fox. After following his hero relentlessly for a long time, Tails became fast enough to keep up with Sonic by spinning his twin tails in a propeller-like style, which gave the fox the ability of flight. Eventually, Sonic and Tails became best friends.
With other characters
Tails has many friends besides Sonic, and his skills are respected by everyone who knows him. In Sonic Heroes he is part of Team Sonic, along with Sonic and Knuckles. Tails mostly treats and respects all his friends the same with a humble and somewhat passive attitude. For the most part, he has a friendly relationship with Amy Rose. Amy can be quite insulting and outspoken to Tails, like she is to everyone else, but they can work together productively and sometimes Amy is defensive of him; for example, by getting mad at Wave for laughing at him. Tails is also friendly with Knuckles. They converse more than Knuckles does with Sonic, although they do tend to irritate each other occasionally - Knuckles scares Tails in Sonic Heroes during the ghost levels, while Knuckles gets confused when Tails talks about technicalities in Sonic Riders. Tails is also on friendly terms with Cream the Rabbit and Cheese the Chao. Some fans believe that Tails and Cream like each other, though Sega has never revealed any relationship between them, and interaction between the two has been minimal. In Sonic Adventure 2, he had a rivalry with Eggman, fighting him directly in the Cyclone twice - once on Prison Island, the second time on the Space Colony ARK after Eggman blasted Sonic into space. After this, the rivalry seemed to cease, and Eggman and Tails are seen talking to each other in a quite civil way at the end of the game. He also found a rival in Wave the Swallow in Sonic Riders. In the game, she insulted his Extreme Gear skills to lower his morale, but her action caused a determined Tails to beat her in a race.
Tails' mechanical creations
Although Tails can fly by twirling his two tails like the blades of a helicopter, he also enjoys flying Sonic's red biplane, the Tornado. As the series progressed, it was obvious his interest in the old biplane went further than just piloting it - Tails is a prodigy with mechanics, and he has a mechanical ability equal to that of Dr. Eggman's (though Tails has never built sentient robots). As a result, many modifications were made to the Tornado, as well as new biplanes and a small, blue submarine called the "Sea Fox", a spaceship called the "Lunar Fox", and a race car called the "Whirlwind S7," which is clearly based upon the Lotus/Catherham Super Seven (hence the name). In Tails Adventure he built small remote-controlled robots shaped like himself to help him on his quest. In Sonic the Hedgehog:The Movie (also known as Sonic Anime) Tails tampers with a tracking device given to him by Eggman to find the location of Robotropolis and the whereabouts of 'Black Eggman'. After the escapade turns out to be a trick, Tails uses his quick thinking to modify the device back at his home and uses the chipset to make an interference device which somehow causes Metal Sonic to malfunction. The device is later shot off of Tails' arm by Eggman, narrowly missing his arm. In Sonic Adventure, Tails was experimenting with a Chaos Emerald-powered prototype plane based on Sonic's Tornado, the Tornado 2. The Tornado 2 has two modes. One is quite similar to the original Tornado, but with a button press, Tails could make it transform into a rather futuristic-looking little plane which outperformed the Tornado in all but one important function - landing gear. Big the Cat ended up flying the wrecked Tornado 2 to his home after Sonic and Tails crash-landed on Eggman's flying fortress, the Egg Carrier. In Sonic Adventure 2, Tails had a new plane, the Tornado 3. The Tornado 3 has three modes: a plane mode, a car mode, and a walker mode. The airplane is only seen in cutscenes; the car is used on only one level (In the Kart minigame, Tails uses a go-kart); the walker mode, called the Cyclone, is used most during the game. Tails uses the Cyclone during all other gameplay, except when visiting the Chao Garden. The old Tornado II then appears in cutscenes in both Sonic Heroes and Sonic Riders. In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Tornado 3 reappeared as its Sonic Adventure 2 version. In Sonic X, Tails uses a variety of aircraft. He starts out with the Tornado II, which is the same as in Sonic Adventure although it appears to be slightly bulkier, and gets damaged almost every time it flies. Later, Tails and Chuck upgraded it to the larger, jet-powered X-Tornado. It has the ability to transform into the X-Cyclone (a walker, like the original Cyclone) and into Battle Armor Mode, which resembles a mecha wielding a sword and a shield. Also in the second episode, he built tiny flying paper airplane-shaped weapons to help Sonic. At the end of Season 2, Tails heads back to his world in the Tornado 2. Seemingly, the X-Tornado was too big to fit through the portal. Whether it was scaled down or is simply a replication is unknown. Upon arriving home, Tails soon finds himself caught up in a battle with Eggman. He transforms the craft into the Hyper Tornado, a sleek jet fighter. This feature was a final present from Chuck. At the start of Season 3, Tails' primary aircraft is again the X-Tornado, although it is now painted gold. The Hyper Tornado is still used in this season, with Chris Thorndyke being its pilot.
Blue Typhoon
In Sonic X, Tails' ultimate creation is the Blue Typhoon, a starship that is used in the war against the Metarex. Originally built to battle vessels created by Dr. Eggman, the Blue Typhoon was adapted for space travel. Tails intended to power it with the Chaos Emeralds, but when they were scattered across the galaxy, he was forced to use the Master Emerald instead. The Blue Typhoon features a large hangar where several aircraft are kept. Directly in front of this is a runway with palm trees lining it, modeled after the Thorndyke residence driveway. The vessel is heavily armed, its main weapon being the Sonic Driver, also called the Sonic Power Cannon, which fires Sonic as an accelerated projectile. In Episode 77, it shown that the cannon can also work as a wave motion gun. The Blue Typhoon also comes equipped with a powerful energy projector which can produce a deflector shield or a cloaking field. Its engine, which takes up much of the vessel, allows it to cover great distances in short periods of time, although it requires a "warp ring" (generated by the yellow nose section) to travel at faster-than-light speeds. The Typhoon's design may have been influenced by the Space Battleship Yamato, from the anime series of the same name.
Moves and abilities
Like many of the other characters in the Sonic universe, Tails has super speed (but not as fast as Sonic or Shadow), and can perform the Sonic Spin, Spin Dash, and the homing attack. He also has several unique attacks, such as attacking with his tails by twirling around. Most notably, he can achieve flight by spinning his two tails around like a helicopter rotor. He can also swim quite well, which is an ability Sonic never had. This, when combined with his flying ability, actually makes him quite an unfairly skilled character in some games. In Sonic Adventure, he obtained the "Rhythm Badge", which enabled him to attack with his tails by continuously spinning around. In Sonic Heroes, he is the Flight member of Team Sonic, which means that he can also use the Thunder Shoot attack, where he electrically charges Sonic and Knuckles and kicks them at his enemies. When alone, Tails can also throw Dummy Rings, which electrocute enemies who blunder into them. In Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails can once again fly through Dash Rings and use Dummy Ring attacks. The first attack is "Dummy Ring Bomb", which throws multiple Dummy Rings that explode on impact, "Dummy Ring Snipe", which allows him to aim and throw a Dummy Ring, and "Dummy Ring Blitz", which throws a huge amount of Dummy Rings to explode on impact. Like many Sonic characters, Tails can transform into a super form by using the Chaos Emeralds. He also has other transformations in media beside the games. In "Sonic's Evil Twin", like Sonia, Tail's medallion transforms into a Keyboard synthesizer which is capable of firing laser blasts as well as creating smoke screen. The keyboard also transforms into a laser rifle which he uses to attack Nega-Sonic.
Weaknesses
Tails is pretty weak and frail, thanks to his young age, and is also quite naive as well. This could end up getting him into loads of trouble. He has a soft spot inside him and is very quick to pity and help someone in need. While he hides it well, he desperately wants a family- his real family. Has a terrible phobia of lightening. He (in the new series) is also addicted to mints. Due to him being a fox (in the new series as well), the majority he eats is meat.
Comics and TV shows
Tails has appeared in three cartoon shows, SatAM, its comic spin-off, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Movie, Sonic X, Sonic the Comic, and the Sonic X comic series. However, he is absent from Sonic Underground.
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
In Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, he is a lot younger than in the games; he is "only 4 and a half", as he says in the episode "Slowwww Going." As with the SegaSonic canon, his real given name is revealed to be "Miles" in the episode "Tails' New Home". In this same episode, it is said that he hates the name and wants to keep it a secret, which means Sonic can use it to blackmail him out of danger ("You get out of here now before I tell everyone your real name!"). However, in later episodes, he is not shy at all in using his real name. It is also revealed that the "Tails" name come from Sonic's naming of Miles. In the episode "Tails Tale", it is revealed his full name is Miles Prower, keeping with the SegaSonic canon. Like in the games, Tails and Sonic are best friends, but AoStH takes it a step further by making them surrogate brothers. Tails seems to have a vast intelligence in mechanics and can operate independently in drastic situations, such as in one instance lacing an entire building with booby-traps (in a manner similar to those seen in Home Alone) in order to revive Sonic from a nasty ailment. He also bulit Sonic a flying bike for his birthday out of parts he found from a junkyard and invented a machine the would have stopped Doctor Robotnik forever if it wasn't tampered with. He is not that intimidated by Robotnik or any of his creations, and Scratch and Grounder often fall for his elaborate ruses. While Tails is indeed useful to Sonic in many situations, he can be a hindrance. Because he is very young and he cannot defend himself, he is incredibly susceptible to kidnappings. Sonic appears to know of this flaw and does his best to protect him, but his protection methods are often the reason why he gets kidnapped in the first place. There are times where it seems like Tails isn't that smart at all in AoStH. According to the episode "Slowwww Going", he cannot write, only "scribble". In the episode "Over the Hill Hero", Sonic gives him a lesson about air pressure. He also seems to have a large appetite (exemplified in the episode "Too Tall Tails," in which he eats so much that he grows to a gigantic size), and like Sonic, his favorite food is chili dogs (it is revealed that he likes his with extra cheese). Tails is also known to get jealous whenever Sonic stops paying attention to him, whether it's a girl or something else. When Breezie appeared, Tails became jealous of her because Sonic would listen to every word she said and ignore Tails, he also yells "yuck!" when Breezie kisses Sonic, However, Tails discovers the truth about Breezie after a short swim (Breezie throws him into a lake, instructing him to float down the river and get "lost at sea"). Tails is usually the one that discovers a way out of situations that look bad, and due to his young age he occasionally gets into bad situations. He is a fan of a famous pilot called William La Duck, and gets help from him in the episode "Tails Tale".
Sonic the Hedgehog comics
Tails also appears in the American Sonic the Hedgehog comic published by Archie Comics, where he is developed upon as the "Chosen One," a hero destined to be greater than either Sonic or Knuckles, and the son of Rosemary and Amadeus Prower, also having an uncle named Merlin. In the Archie Sonic comic, he seemed to have lost his parents at an early age, and admired the Freedom Fighters, particularly Sonic. He has grown pretty close with the Princess Sally, as he calls her Aunt Sally. He is also Sonic's surrogate little brother. Jules and Bernie Hedgehog (Sonic's parents in the comic version) also view Tails as a son to them. During his journey through space, Sonic met Tails' parents on Argentium, home planet of the Bem aliens. When he absorbs fifty rings and seven Chaos Emeralds, he becomes Turbo Tails. His fur color changes from orange to dark orange, all natural abilities are upgraded and he is, like Super Sonic, immune to all attacks that come his way. He has only once made an appearance as Super Tails after he had absorbed the power of a thousand power rings in a battle along side Ultra Sonic against the evil wizard Ixis Naugus. He was aided by four flickies that have chaos energy and that will attack whatever he wishes them to. Tails, like Sonic, has multiple other-dimensional counterparts, whom he teamed up with to fight his nemesis, Mammoth Mogul. When this proved ineffective, Tails merged with his alternate selves to become a massive cosmic being known as Titan Tails. Archie Comics produced a supplementary 3-issue mini-series in the mid-nineties, in which Tails embarked on a solo adventure to the land of Downunda, a supposed parallel of Australia, where several marsupials befriended him including one Barby Koala. Leading into the story arc featured in the mini-series was a two-part mini-adventure in which Tails encountered a disguised robot named Fiona Fox, a robotic duplicate of a young vixen. He fell in love with her before discovering her robotic nature. The organic counterpart of Fiona is now featured in the Archie comic and Tails (now 11 yrs old) seems to have a crush on her, although she is less than interested in him as she is several years older. (Fiona Fox herself has recently been seen dating, of all people, Sonic; Tails ended up screaming "I HATE YOU!" at Sonic when he found out.) Later, Tails was abducted by A.D.A.M., who intended to use Tails and Shadow to collect every Chaos Emerald in the universe to give himself unimaginable power. However, A.D.A.M.'s plan was brought to a halt as Eggman woke him and Shadow up. Turbo Tails, working through intuition, had Super Shadow use his time-space warping abilities to access Zone of Silence; they then sent the collected Chaos Emeralds there, with Tails saying he hoped it would cause "something special." When Tails and Sonic went into the Zone later to retrieve an emerald, they were met by Feist, who gave them the grey Chaos Emerald composed of thousands of others-one of seven he had created-as thanks for them sending him the jewels in the first place. Thus, the Chaos Emeralds had been limited and hidden in the newly-created Special Zone, in part fulfilling the prophesized "Great Harmony." Later, Tails was reunited with his parents with the help of Sonic, Knuckles, and his uncle Merlin. He was then one of the few members of the Freedom Fighters to have escaped being captured by Eggman's forces during the assault on Knothole that resulted in the city's destruction, and assisted Sonic, NICOLE, Amy, and Knuckles in the ensuing rescue mission. Unfortunately, Tails' tense relationship with Sonic deepened to an argument as to how they should proceed with the rescue. This stressed to the point of breaking as the pair found themselves on opposite sides of a schism in the Kingdom of Acorn, Tails supporting the side led by his father and Sonic remaining loyal to the House of Acorn. When Tails helped his mother break Amadeus out of jail, long suppressed hostility was released as he and Sonic fought with each other. Tails was quick to bring up his fury at Sonic's lack of sensitivity, and refused to explain it to the baffled Hedgehog since he felt that Sonic would probably just ignore what he was saying again. Finally, the young Fox revealed that his main dispute with Sonic was over Fiona and Sonic's seeming dismissal of his feelings for her, and Sonic admitted that he had known about Tails' feelings and apologized, explaining that he had hoped that it would help Tails get over his crush. Reconciled, the two headed off to stop a duel between Amadeus and Elias Acorn, only to find out that Sally had beaten them to it. With his father returned to duty, his mother running for a seat on the new ruling council, and his friendship with Sonic restored, Tails' life seemed destined to make an upturn. Sadly, this was not to be the case, as Dimitri the Echidna arrived with an urgent message for Knuckles: Enerjak, the Guardian's most powerful foe ever, had returned-and just after Knuckles had left for Angel Island by himself, only to disappear mysteriously. In an effort to appease the Chaotix, who were determined to go after their missing leader, Sally sent Tails along with Sonic to look for Knuckles. After narrowly missing Enerjak on Angel Island, Tails accompanied Sonic as they raced back towards New Mobotropolis. What awaited them was the ultimate nightmare: Knuckles, their strongest ally, had become the new Enerjak and thus their worst enemy. After bringing Sonic back to New Mobotropolis, however, Tails had virtually no role in battling the brainwashed Knuckles, and in fact remained in the city for the duration of the battle in which Super Sonic-aided by the sacrifice of Knuckles' father Locke-freed Knuckles' from Finitevus' spell. Tails then returned to Knothole to help with repairs on Freedom HQ, and was there when Mina Mongoose arrived home from her concert tour. Both of them, along with Mighty the Armadillo, were then revealed to have all had a hypnotic suggestion implanted in them by Mogul years before, who used his telepathic abilities to bring them into his service. When a similar attempt on Sonic proved less than successful, the trio were sent to aid their master's attempts to recruit the Hedgehog into a new Fearsome Foursome-by force. Sonic proved too much for the trio, however, so Mogul commanded Tails to fly into the stratosphere, effectively forcing Sonic to deliver the grey Chaos Emerald to him or else see Tails faint from the lack of oxygen and die from the eventual fall. His demand met, Mogul freed Tails and the other before departing, having decided that he would use his regained immortality to wait until his foes were either dead or too old to fight him before continuing his open campaign of world domination. Later he and Rotor were attacked by the Suppression Squad in Freedom HQ.
Sonic the Comic
Tails also appears in the British Sonic the Comic, published by Fleetway, where he hails from the Nameless Zone, a region which can apparently only be accessed by a space warp. A misunderstanding led Tails to the Emerald Hill Zone, where the streets of which he believed were paved with real emeralds, but once there, Tails immediately became fascinated with Sonic, and eventually became his sidekick and eventually best friend. Unfortunately for him, though, he exaggerated the relationship in letters home, professing that HE was the great hero of Mobius and that Sonic was HIS sidekick, which resulted in the elders of the Nameless Zone often calling him back, and gifting him with a suit of enchanted armor to defend their Zone from assorted evil - and poor old Tails never did quite manage to explain the truth. One time, Knuckles almost blew Tails cover, he had noticed the kit entering the Nameless zone and came to the conclusion that he was being kidnapped. Knuckles followed Tails and entered the nameless zone; unfortunately for Tails, everyone mistook Knuckles for Sonic, and Tails was sure he was going to be forced to tell the truth. He explained to Knuckles the siuation, Knuckles agreed to play along and kept it all a secret from Sonic, though he had a little talk with Tails afterwards. Tails is an unstoppable Zonerunner (a Freedom Fighter who travels between Zones) by the Chemical Plant Zone rebels known as the Flock. While the Zonerunner & Nameless Zone adventures were 'secret' adventures where Tails was accidentally seen as a major hero, later stories would have him actively doing heroic deeds, though these were mainly short arcs or more comedic stories. On occasions, he would save someone and they would grumble he wasn't a more famous hero! Despite this, Tails gained his own rogue's gallery including the brutal goblin lord Trogg, the psychotic robot Nutzan Bolt, Fleabyte the bounty hunter and the gangster Max Gamble, as well as allies such as Errol & Morain Blackthorn (brother and sister warriors of the Nameless Zone). He also fought many criminals after the defeat of Robotnik, defended the Casino Night Zone & its people from Brutus' Badniks, and was chosen by Sonic to protect the planet while he went after Robotnik during the Planet In Peril/Game Over story. While he is self-conscious, Tails has proven time & again (and openly stated) that he is much tougher than some people may think.
Sonic X
Throughout most of the anime series Sonic X, Tails mirrors his game role in various stories and game adaptions, though he sometimes plays a smaller role due to Chris Thorndyke. He quickly befriends fellow inventor Chuck Thorndyke, who built the X-Tornado jetplane for him. In Series 2 (Season 3), Tails falls in love with Cosmo, the plant-like alien girl introduced in Season 3. The strength of Tails' love is shown in Episode 73, where Shadow, in an attempt to kill Cosmo, clobbers Sonic, Chris, and Knuckles, but, despite his best efforts, could not manage to get past Tails, who was determined to protect Cosmo, no matter the cost. Unfortunately, Cosmo sacrifices herself in Episode 77, fusing herself with the Metarex planet so that Tails could destroy it with the Sonic Driver. Tails was extremely hesiatant to fire, and only did so at the urging of Dr. Eggman and Cosmo herself. In Episode 78, Super Sonic and Super Shadow use "Chaos Regeneration" to try to bring Cosmo back to life, but only manage to produce a small seed. When Sonic shows the seed to Tails, the fox collapses with grief. However, it is possible that Sonic and Shadow succeeded; at the end of the episode, the seed begins to sprout.
How Sonic and Tails met
In every version of the Sonic series, there is a different version of how Sonic and Tails met (excluding Sonic Underground, since Tails was absent from it). As stated earlier, in the video game version (as taken from the official Sonic the Hedgehog 2 manual) Sonic instantly became Tails' idol when Tails first witnessed Sonic's incredible speed. After Sonic sees that the fox is actually able to catch up with him he recruits him as his sidekick. The sequence, as stated above, reappears in Tails's story of Sonic Adventure. In a flash back in Sonic X, Tails and Sonic became friends after Tails rebuilt and repainted Sonic's antique airplane blue, Sonic stating that he never liked it in red (this could be a careful bite at his and Knuckles' relationship, although they meet much later). Before he met Sonic, Tails was bullied by other animals because of his skills. Although Sonic X was made by Sonic Team, it is not possible that this could be the official way they met, as it has been disproved by two previous sources. In a flashback shown in the Adventures Of Sonic the Hedgehog episode "Tails' New Home", Tails literally landed on top of Sonic. The baby fox cub explains to Sonic he had just been kicked out the nest of some birds, young Tails had decided he was a bird due to his ability to fly. Sonic tells him he is in fact a fox and is shocked to see that he can actually fly. Baby Tails follows Sonic and after getting him into some mishaps, Sonic agrees that Tails can stay with him. In Sonic The Comic, Sonic saved Tails from drowning in a swamp when they first met when he saw two tails peering from the swamp, the rest of Tails' body completely submerged. Mistakenly believing there were two foxes in the swamp, Sonic only had time to grab one tail and believed one fox had drowned; he soon realized that both tails belonged to the same fox. The Saturday morning cartoon did not give an explanation as to how they met, but the comics based off it did. In the flashback story "Eve of Destruction", the five-year-old Sonic witnesses Tails' birth and befriends with him 2 pages later.

Games

In April 1990, Sega requested a game capable of selling over one million copies and a character to replace Alex Kidd as the company's mascot. Several character designs were submitted by its AM8 research & development department, including an armadillo (who was later developed into Mighty the Armadillo), a dog, an over-sized Theodore Roosevelt in pajamas (which would later be the basis of Doctor Eggman's design), and a rabbit (intended to use its extendable ears to collect objects; these aspects were later incorporated into Ristar). Eventually, Naoto Ohshima's spiky hedgehog, initially codenamed "Mr Needlemouse", was chosen as the new mascot. A group of fifteen started working on Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit), and renamed themselves Sonic Team. The game's soundtrack was composed by Masato Nakamura of the band Dreams Come True. Sega sponsored the group's "Wonder 3" tour, painting Sonic on the tour bus, distributing pamphlets advertising the game, and having footage of the game broadcast above stage prior to its release.

Sonic's precise age, weight, height and other physical characteristics vary depending on the continuity in which he appears and the style in which he is drawn. In the video games, Sonic's original design by Naoto Ohshima was quite short and childlike, with short quills, a round body, and no visible irises. Artwork featuring this design and drawn by Akira Watanabe was displayed on the package artwork for Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit), and most subsequent Sonic video games featured similar designs. Beginning with Sonic Adventure in 1998, Sonic was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa as a taller character with longer legs and a less spherical body, longer and more drooping spikes, and green-coloured eyes. Further subtle changes to the character's design have been made in subsequent games. Spin-off media such as comics and cartoons have featured variations on all these video game designs, with restrictions set by the standardized model sheets.

His cobalt blue pigmentation has never been explained in the games; however, explanations were offered as the character was transferred to other media. One origin story was provided in a promotional comic for the original game featured in Disney Adventures, Garfield Magazine, and other children's periodicals, which was later elaborated upon in Mike Pattenden's Stay Sonic, a book about the character published in the UK. This explanation, in which the shock waves Sonic experienced when he first ran at supersonic speed turned him blue and streamlined his hair and spikes, later became the basic origin for many subsequent UK publications such as Egmont Fleetway's Sonic the Comic.

Comic

A made up story was thought up by the developers at Sega in 1991. The story goes like this: Sonic the Hedgehog was originally the nickname of an American pilot who, throughout his life, persistently attempted to break the sound barrier. This wasn't the only thing that earned him his nick name, every time he climbed out of the cockpit of his plane his hair stuck backwards, like a hedgehog's, thus the nick name Sonic the Hedgehog. His color may not have ever been explained in the games, but it is explained by the fact that the pilot's flight jacket had a an emblem of a blue hedgehog on the back, signifying his soon-to-be-famous nick name. During his last flight, however, he lost control of his plane it crashed into the ground and he died instantaneously. Later on, a young reporter came across this jacket at an old shop in the town in which the pilot had once lived. She purchased the jacket remembering stories of a little character named Sonic the Hedgehog that the pilot's wife had told to the children of the neighborhood. Some time later, The video game company we've come to know as SEGA, got a hold of this information which had inspired them to make games based on the tales made up by the pilot's wife, thus starting a world-wide boom which still lives on to this day.

Even though this story started out as fiction, it is now believed by some fans as a real story on how Sega got the idea of Sonic The Hedgehog.

Sonic lost his parents at an early age, and has lived with his Uncle Chuck about as long as he can remember (hence the love of chili dogs). As a small child Sonic had a natural knack for running, and spent much of his free time trying to get faster. As he grew, the knack evolved into a highly developed skill, and by his adolescence Sonic was reaching the speed of sound -- with the help of his uncle's special friction-proof shoes.

When the news of Robotnik's plans reached the hedgehogs, Sonic (age 9) immediately sprang into action to help. He bid his uncle farewell-for-now and raced off to stop the mad doctor. His success in the fight gained him two things: his independence, and the birth of his enormous ego. Sonic has been dueling with Robotnik ever since, picking up friends like Tails and Knuckles along the way.

Appearances
Games

Sonic started his battle against his nemesis Robotnik in the 1991 platform game Sonic for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System and Game Gear. His sidekick Tails joined him in the game's 1992 sequel Sonic 2, which also introduced Sonic's signature "Spin-Dash" move. Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles both released 1994 saw Sonic and Tails battle Robotnik yet again, with the additional threat of Knuckles, tricked by Robotnik into fighting Sonic.

Sonic was solo once again for Sonic CD (1993), in which he used his unrivaled speed to travel through time to defeat Eggman and ensure a good future for the world, and which also introduced Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend Amy Rose into the video games, and his new robotic doppelganger Metal Sonic

Other 2D platforms starring Sonic include Sonic Chaos (1993), Sonic Triple Trouble (1994), Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure (1999), the Sonic Advance series (2001—2004) and Sonic Rush (2005).

The first Sonic platform game in true 3D, Sonic Adventure (1998) was the original developer Sonic Team's return to the character for a major game. It featured Sonic returning from vacation to find the seaside city of Station Square under attack by a new, very powerful foe named Chaos, under the control of Doctor Robotnik (Now known as Doctor Eggman). It introduced Sonic's homing attack as a standard move, included power-ups that awarded him extra abilities for the rest of the game, and featured interaction with non-playable characters and objects in 3D "Adventure" sequences, where the game world could be freely explored. In addition to Sonic, who was given a full voice-over for the first time, five other major characters were playable, plus Super Sonic. Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the series, introduced a new rival, in the form of the ultimate life, Shadow the Hedgehog new characters, and involved Sonic on-the-run from the military after being framed for a robbery he didn't commit. It is also the first game where the planet is called Earth, in game. A third 3D action game, Sonic Heroes, featured four different teams made up by three characters in each, and marked the official return of supporting characters Team Chaotix as the teams battled Eggman and the evil return of Metal Sonic who wanted to achieve world domination himself. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006 game) which celebrated the 15th anniversary of the series, featured the first appearance of Blaze the Cat in a home console and a new foe called Silver the Hedgehog who possesses powerful psychic abilities. In 2007, Sonic and the Secret Rings released where Sonic along with his genie friend Shahra battled to protect the Arabian Nights.

Sonic has also been featured in games of many genres other than 2D and 3D platform games. The first of these was a pinball game, Sonic Spinball (1993), which expanded upon the pinball sequences in the first two platform games. Sonic has also appeared in "2.5D" isometric platforms (Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Battle and Sonic 3D Blast), racing games (Sonic Drift, Sonic R, Sonic Riders, and Sonic Rivals) and fighting games (Sonic the Fighters and Sonic Battle). The sequel to Sonic Riders has also been released, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity . There is also a sequel of Sonic & the Secret Rings known as Sonic & the Black Knight.

Video games such as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Tails' Adventures, Knuckles Chaotix and Shadow the Hedgehog starred supporting characters of the Sonic series; in some of them Sonic had a cameo role. The hedgehog has also made cameo appearances in numerous other Sega games such as Daytona USA and Christmas NiGHTS. Sonic will battle Eggman again in the upcoming game Sonic Unleashed, where Eggman shatters the planet and Sonic has to find the Chaos Emeralds to put it back together. Things are made more difficult by the fact that Sonic now transforms into a werewolf at night.
Television series

There have been several animated television series featuring Sonic. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was the first and featured Sonic, voiced by Jaleel White, and Robotnik, voiced by Long John Baldry. It had a very comical take on Sonic and Tails' adventures and battles with Robotnik.

Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM), originally broadcast on Saturdays on ABC, was broadcast concurrently with the syndicated Adventures series in the United States. Sonic was voiced by Jaleel White, and Robotnik was voiced by Jim Cummings. The Archie Comics continuity was based heavily on this series; it was far more dark and brooding than Adventures showing Robotnik as a fersome dictator controlling Mobius and Sonic and his Freedom Fighter friends battle to take back their planet..

Sonic Underground, a show in the US, United Kingdom and France, ignored the continuity of the previous series and games and instead introduced two siblings and Sonic's mother, named Sonia, Manic and Queen Aleena respectively. White returned to voice Sonic, with Samuel Vincent providing his singing voice, while Robotnik was voiced by Gary Chalk It showed Sonic and his siblings as royalty but they have to battle to take back their thrones from the evil dictator..

Additionally, there was a Sonic the Hedgehog OAV Anime OAV in Japan which featured Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman and Metal Sonic. Sonic was voiced by Masami Kikuchi in Japan, and Martin Burke in the United States where the OVA was marketed as Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.

The latest animated Sonic television series, Sonic X, is an anime in which a massive Chaos Control blast results in Sonic and his friends being transported from his world to the human world (however Season 3 mainly takes place in Sonic's own world). Like the other television series, it has an original storyline not present in any of the games, although it can be viewed as an elaboration upon the Sonic Adventure games' story lines. Music from the games is used during select key moments in the series, and several animation sequences strongly resemble cut scenes from the console titles. In addition, the characters' designs are based upon the more recent Sonic games' character designs. Sonic is voiced by Jun'ichi Kanemaru in the Japanese version, and by Jason Griffith in the English version.
Books and comics

Sonic's first comic appearance was in a promotional comic printed in Disney Adventures magazine, which established an origin for Sonic involving the transformation of kindly scientist Dr. Ovi Kintobor into the evil Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Numerous British publications, including "Sega handbook" Stay Sonic (1993), four novels published by Virgin Books (1993–1994) and the comic book Sonic the Comic (1993–2002) used this premise as their basis.

The American comics published by Archie Comics, Sonic the Hedgehog (comics) (1993—) and Sonic X (comics) (2005—) are based on the settings established by earlier animated TV series, the ABC "Sonic the Hedgehog (sat AM)" cartoon and the Sonic X anime respectively.

In Japan, Sonic manga have been published.
Cameos/popularity

Sonic has proven to be an extremely popular character. After having been around only 2 years, he had already surpassed Nintendo's Mario in popularity according to a June 1993 Q-Survey in Game players magazine. As a result of this popularity, he has been referred to in various parts of culture. One of a class of genes involved in fruit fly embryonic development, called hedgehog genes, has been named "sonic hedgehog" after the character.

Other references are present in television programs. In the show Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, in the episode "Camp Capers", Ami is captured by Bigfoot. Yumi pretends she is in a video game, and she runs through a 16-bit forest area, jumps on a crab (thus killing it) then goes at sound-barrier-breaking speeds and runs over a checkered loop, obviously a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)s Green Hill Zone. An episode of Megas XLR spoofed Sonic with a parade balloon called Auggie the Adorable Aardvark (that also spoofs Mickey Mouse by wearing the same clothes), that was mutated and could do Sonic attacks such as the Spin Dash. In the show "15/Love", in Adena and Tannis' dorm room, there is a poster with the cover of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game in it. Sonic also made a cameo appearance in the episode of The Simpsons entitled "Marge Be Not Proud", voiced by Dan Castellaneta. He appears, though green, along with Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and fictional pro golfer Lee Carvallo, trying to convince Bart Simpson to steal a video game. As reported by famous UK fan site The Sonic Stadium, he reappears in a 1990s themed episode on a billboard proposing to Amy saying "Sonic the Hedgehog says: wait 'til marriage." On Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Space Ghost is seen playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles on the guest monitor. Sonic has also made appearances in films. In the 1996 movie Jingle All The Way, in the scene where Jamie arrives at the parade, Sonic can be seen as a character marching in the parade. In the movie Hitch, on the side of an ice cream truck, there is a picture of a Sonic Popsicle . Sonic has also appeared in Wayne's World.

Sonic has also made appearances as a character in parades. In 1996, Sonic was the first video game character to be seen in a Rose Parade. Sonic was also in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade; the only other video game character to ever be in the parade was Pikachu.

Sonic has been a mascot for various sports teams as well. Between 1993 and 1997, Sega sponsored the JEF United Ichihara Chiba football (soccer) team. During this period, Sonic appeared on the team's uniform. During the 1993 Formula One championship, Sega sponsored WilliamsF1, which won the season. Sonic was featured in the cars, helmets, and rival Team McLaren used to paint a squashed hedgehog after winning races over Williams. The 1993 European Grand Prix featured a Sonic balloon and Sonic billboards. The trophy was a statue of the hedgehog.

Lately, things have seemed to patched up with Nintendo, and Sonic appears as a 3rd Party playable character in Super Smash Bros Brawl

Panic the Hedgehog, a character from the Moron Comics parody series of Sonic the Hedgehog and The Amazing Spider-Man, Panic the Hedgehog and The Annoying Spitter-Man, is a parody of Sonic.

Sonic also made a cameo in Journey in the end of the night where he can be seen on a billboard where it says Sonic Rules.
Voice acting

The earliest voice of Sonic was Takeshi Kusao in the game SegaSonic the Hedgehog, a June 1993 arcade release starring Sonic the Hedgehog, Mighty the Armadillo, and Ray the Flying Squirrel.

Sonic CD featured brief dialogue.

In September 1993, DiC Entertainment cast Jaleel White, more popularly known as portraying the character of Steve Urkel, as Sonic in their simultaneously released shows Sonic the Hedgehog: The Series, Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. White would later be cast as Sonic for DiC's 1999 show Sonic Underground.

In 1996, when the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA was produced in Japan, Sonic was voiced by Masami Kikuchi. The 1999 English-language dub featured Martin Burke in Sonic's role.

Starting with the 1998 game Sonic Adventure, all of Sonic's video games feature voice acting. Sonic was played by Junichi Kanemaru, who later went on to play Sonic in the Japanese version of Sonic X. Ryan Drummond performed the role of Sonic in Sonic Adventure and continued to play the role for several games. Information taken from the credits of both Sonic Adventure games, the Sonic Advance series, and Sonic Heroes. 4Kids Entertainment decided not to use Drummond's voice in their US/UK dub of Sonic X, instead choosing their own Jason Griffith. Despite this, Drummond continued to provide the voice of Sonic in the series until 2005, when Sega replaced all their Sonic voice actors with their 4Kids counterparts, in order to keep his voice the same in all media forms. Effectively, this meant that beginning with Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Rush, Jason Griffith became the official game voice actor for Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog (and Jet the Hawk in Sonic Riders). This has been a controversial decision among fans of the Sonic Adventure series and Sonic Heroes voice cast.
Character
Personality

Sonic has been described as being "like the wind", and is noted for being free-spirited and adventurous. He enjoys relaxation, but is never one to rest in the face of injustice. He is extremely benevolent, and willingly puts himself at risk to help others, taking on any challenge that confronts him without hesitation. However, Sonic is not generally modest when it comes to his abilities; in fact, he is often portrayed as being narcissistic and self-absorbed. The British Sonic the Comic presented him as being bossy and arrogant, often making cruel jokes about his friend Miles "Tails" Prower, and characters regularly referred to his strange sense of humour.

In the American cartoon's and comics,and the Japanese version of Sonic Advance 3 strategy guide,Sonic's favorite food is chili dogs. He displays an interest in rock music, and in the cartoon Sonic Underground was a vocalist in his own band. Some official character art and a television commercial for Sonic Adventure suggests that he has a personal hobby as a DJ. Furthermore, it is displayed in Sonic Rush for the Nintendo DS that Sonic also enjoys break dancing as it is one of his primary ways for filling up his Rush meter. His battle moves in Sonic Battle are also based on break dancing, as mentioned in the attack descriptions. He also break dances in Sonic Advance 3 if he finishes a level in a short-enough time. Lastly, one of his taunts in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is him break dancing and saying, "C'mon, step it up!" He has been credited as "the fastest thing alive" since Sonic the Hedgehog (DiC) and through Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Abilities

Sonic is known best for his speed, with the ability to run at speeds higher than Mach 1 (higher than roughly 761.2 mph). He is known as "the fastest thing alive," and can run backwards just as well as forwards, as shown in the Team Sonic opening cut scene of Sonic Heroes, in an episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Underground, and near the end of the first episode in Sonic X. Due to such speed, he is able to scale right up the walls of buildings, or similar structures, and can also run right over the water.

Many of his abilities are variations on the tendency for hedgehogs to roll into tight balls for protection. Since his introduction in the first sonic the hedgehog, Sonic's primary offensive maneuver is the basic Spin Attack (or "Sonic Spin Attack"). As Sonic jumps or runs, he curls up and spins into a spiky ball when in motion that can damage, destroy or burrow through many obstacles or foes. Later games in the series expanded on this basic attack. Two of these enhancements have become mainstays of his: the Spin Dash was introduced in sonic2 and involves Sonic spinning on the spot before blasting off at full speed, and the Homing Attack, officially introduced in Sonic Adventure, although unnamed variations of it appeared in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic 3D Blast, in which Sonic dashes in midair toward a target. Sonic curls into a ball and revs up before charging forwards in a burst of speed.

The Peel Out or Figure 8 Dash made its debut in Sonic CD, but since has only had minor recurrences in the Archie Comic series and anime. In the Figure 8 Dash, Sonic stands still and his legs run fast enough to create the illusion of an infinity symbol (more correctly a Mobius strip) beneath him in red. He holds this and then blasts forward. One of Sonic's taunts in Super Smash Bros. Brawl involves him spinning his legs fast enough to make this move while commenting on his opponents being "too slow." The Peel Out is also his running animation in Brawl. It is similar to the Spin Dash, but without the curling up part of the move. His feet tend to make the illusion of a figure 8 with this move.

The Blue Tornado is that Sonic jumps into the air, and creates a whirlwind by circling a particular spot at high speeds.

With a Chaos Emerald, Sonic can warp time and space with Chaos Control, and by using all seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic can initiate a super transformation into Super Sonic. In addition, the World Rings introduced in Sonic and the Secret Rings allow Sonic to become Darkspine Sonic, a powerful form powered by his negative emotions. As Darkspine Sonic, Sonic turns purple and has two white stripes between his eyes.
Attacks

Spin Attack: While in locomotion, Sonic can curl down and take on a fetal position, rolling along the ground at a very high speed and rate of torque, meant primarily for breaking through barriers, or destroying enemies.

Spin Jump: Also referred to as the "spinball jump," Sonic is able to leap into the air and curl into a spinning, tightly compacted ball of destruction which can destroy enemies and break barriers.

Spin Dash: Originally named the "Super Spin Dash," Sonic is able to curl down and begin revving up, taking on a diagonally pivoted, ovular shape. Once unleashed, Sonic blasts forward in an acceleration roll of high speeds with limited airborne capability, meant to break barriers or mow down enemies.

Insta-Shield: While in spinball form in midair, Sonic can momentarily encompass his spherical physique with a shield of blue/white energy (Presumed to be static electricity), protecting him from harm for a split second and allowing him to strike through enemy weaknesses.

Super Peel Out: An acceleration technique where, while standing in place, Sonic can rev his legs up at a blinding speed to the point where the blending colors of his shoes and legs causes a figure 8 to flicker about under him, and once unleashed, Sonic speeds forward at supersonic speeds, sometimes accompanied by a split second of invincibility.

Jump Dash/Homing Attack: While airborne in spinball form, Sonic can burst forward in a sudden jolt of speed in a linear path enveloped in a blue aura, and when an enemy or object is near, the jump can be used to home right into the nearby enemy or object with extreme impact power.

Light Dash: When a trail or pattern of rings is in close proximity, Sonic is able to zoom across the trajectory of the ring path at light speed, defying gravity and collecting all of them in a flash.

Sonic Wind: When enough rings are obtained, Sonic can conjure up a powerful whirlwind of swirling blue blades of energy (presumably wind), harming any opponents caught in it.

Chaos Control: With the use of a single Chaos Emerald, Sonic is able to warp time and space and teleport himself to a desired destination, freeze time, speed it up, or slow it down. However, Sonic can become massively fatigued if he instigates Chaos Control with a fake emerald (Probably due to having to compensate for a fake emerald's lack of energy with his own), which can result in fainting. When using it with another user, a portal can be created to travel through time. Whilst in super form, Chaos Control is more potent, to the point that he can teleport massively sized objects, assuming he has help, of course.

Triangle Jump: Sonic basically Jump Dashes between walls but he can only remain rooted on a wall for a short period of time when still.

Blue Tornado: When in mid-air, Sonic can assume spinball form and repeatedly follow the trajectory of a perfect circle, stirring up a substantially powerful vortex of blue colored winds, sending anything caught in it flying up into the air and ultimately helpless.

Super Boost: Quite possibly Sonic's greatest acceleration move: at will, Sonic is able to burst forward in a blaze of blue energy and instantly achieve supersonic speeds upon lifting his feet off the ground without virtually any acceleration delay. However, it greatly depletes his tension and stamina.

Bounce Attack/Bound Jump: Sonic jumps and slams down on the enemy, gaining a bit more altitude with each bounce.

Mach Speed: By utilising the blue gem in the shoes given to him by Mr Roberto of Soleanna, Sonic can perform a very quick but temporary dash of speed.

Tornado: By utilising the green gem in the shoes given to him by Mr Roberto of Soleanna, Sonic can utilise a repetitive break dance move to create a twister of light blue wind around himself, damaging enemies in the vicinity.

Slow: By utilising the red gem in the shoes given to him by Mr Roberto of Soleanna, Sonic can slow time in the area around him.

Homing Smash: By utilising the white gem in the shoes given to him by Mr Roberto of Soleanna, Sonic can charge a more marginally powerful homing attack potentially indefinitely in mid-air.

Gun Drive: By utilising the sky blue gem in the shoes given to him by Mr Roberto, Sonic can throw the sky blue gem then immediately leap towards the thrown gem's location with incredible speed and accuracy.

Scale: By utilising the purple gem in the shoes given to him by Mr Roberto of Soleanna, Sonic can minimize his body size from 100cm to only a couple of inches tall. He can perform infinite jumps and has greater running speed.

Thunder Guard: By utilising the yellow gem in the shoes given to him by Mr Roberto of Soleanna, Sonic can project an electrified shield around himself that protects him from damage once and attracts nearby rings.

Speed Break: Similar to his Super Boost, Sonic can dash forward at tremendous speeds enveloped in flames, surpassing large distances and damaging enemies in his way. Shahra's power is needed for this to work.

Time Break: Similar to Chaos Control, Sonic can slow time to an extremely slow crawl, enabling easy passage of obstacles. Sonic needs Shahra's power to enable this feat.

Sonic Boom: Sonic cuts loose at his true, would famous speed for a few moments, breaking the sound barrier and anyone else who gets in his way.

Above Average Strength: Like most of the other Sonic character, Sonic possess strength above that of an average human.
Weakness

Sonic is incapable of swimming which causes him to sink like a stone in water, probably mainly due to his great body weight for his size and narrow limbs or possibly due to his presumed aquaphobia, although, if hitting the water while running, he can dash across the water's surface, completely bypassing the hazard. (an exception being in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in which all characters are able to swim, but he can only swim for a brief period of time before drowning) In most media, he is shown completely avoiding water. In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games when Sonic competes in Aquatics events, he is the only character who wears a life vest. However, in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic can swim without a life vest, though he has one of the shortest swim-times in the game.

Possibly aquaphobic, Sonic might be terribly afraid of water, but there is no absolute solid evidence of this, even though he's shown many times being afraid of water of any kind, even puddles.

Highly impatient, Sonic has a awful habit of walking blindly into dangerous situations without thinking them through, which has put him in great danger more than once. Usually though, his quick thinking and speed gets him out of trouble.

It's debatable whether Sonic can survive reentry or not. After his first battle with Dark Oak, he fell through the atmosphere, getting knocked out on impact, but only got some burns and bruises. However, if he falls to Earth during Final Rush, he loses a life.

Shadow the Hedgehog (シャドウ・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Shadō Za Hejjihoggu) is a video game character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anti hero and the arch rival of Sonic the Hedgehog. Created as "The Ultimate Life Form" by Professor Gerald Robotnik, Shadow is an "ultimate immortal", in the sense that he physically won't age and will live forever, and in the sense that it is entirely impossible to kill him.

Shadow is an artificially created life form in the design of a male, anthropomorphic hedgehog. His trademark hover skates propel him at extreme speeds that rival those of Sonic. Shadow resembles Sonic in many ways. He is distinguished from Sonic by his skin, eye color, cuffs, shoes, and a slightly different hair shape. He is one of Sonic's rivals and is considered to be an anti-hero. He has black skin with red highlights on his hair, forehead, arms and legs, triangular white chest hair, tan muzzle, red eyes and wears light weight, hyper friction resistant, speed-enhancing white, black, red and yellow Jet Shoes installed with five jets that enable Shadow to hoverskate, white gloves backed by black, red-tongued cuffs and gold energy rings which seem to limit his power somewhat and click into place on the cuffs when placed back on after being taken off, and inhibitor rings.

Since his debut, Shadow has appeared in a multitude of games, television shows, and comic books. His past was almost a complete mystery until the game Shadow the Hedgehog revealed the events surrounding his creation. In contrast to Sonic, Shadow is typically portrayed as a tortured anti-hero, or a renegade who can just as easily serve the forces of evil as those of good. According to an official poll, he is the second most popular character in the series, second only to Sonic himself
Game Appearances

Shadow debuted in the game Sonic Adventure 2 as one of three main antagonists, alongside Rouge the Bat. Dr. Eggman set Shadow free from a G.U.N. base on Prison Island, where he had spent 50 years imprisoned. In exchange Shadow agreed to aid the doctor in his plans to take over the world; holding his true intentions as wishing to get revenge for the death of his friend, Maria Robotnik. To achieve this,Shadow revealed the eclipse cannon to Dr. Eggman, blowing up half of the moon in demonstration. In a twist of fate, Shadow ultimately aided Sonic when realizing Maria's true wish with the help of Amy Rose, which was to save humanity. In Last story, Eggman inserts the final emerald, only to initiate a destabilization program on the ARK. Gerald Robotnik then revealed that he had made this function to have revenge for Maria, and that the ARK would destroy the Earth. Meanwhile, Sonic and Knuckles had reached the Central Core, where they reactivated the Biolizard. Notably, a scene from Gerald Robotnik's diary appeared. After Shadow defeated it, Knuckles used the Master Emerald to stop the Chaos emeralds. But the Biolizard, being the prototype of Project Shadow, used Chaos Control to fuse with the ARK, continuing its fall. Then, as Super Sonic and Super Shadow, they destroyed the Biolizard (the Ultimate Life form prototype), having become a monster named Finalhazard, and using their pooled energies, created a Chaos Control which stopped the fall. Afterwards, Shadow fell to the earth and was presumed dead.

In Sonic Heroes, Rouge discovers Shadow in a stasis tube located in the deepest part of one of Dr. Eggman's bases. As she activates the capsule, E-123 Omega begins to attack the newly awakened Shadow, believing him to be an android. Shadow discovers that he has amnesia and cannot remember anything before his release. He joins forces with Rouge and the robot E-123 Omega to form Team Dark and find Eggman. It is later revealed that Eggman had made robotic android versions of Shadow, and the question is raised as to whether or not Shadow himself is one of these androids. Ultimately, when Metal Sonic transformed into Metal Madness, Shadow worked with everyone else to help defeat it. Shadow is last seen with Omega and the defeated Metal Sonic. In Sonic Battle, Rouge saves Shadow while they are investigating Dr. Eggman's secret base and takes him back to her home. Shadow talks about how the people of Earth must destroy him and Emerl if they ever want peace, still believing that he is a weapon. It is revealed, however, that he ultimately has the heart and soul of Maria Robotnik, implying he could not be the enemy of humanity. In one of Gerald Robotnik's journal entries, he mentions that "Project Shadow" was put on hold because of Project Gizoid.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow is revealed to be the dual creation of the alien overlord Black Doom and Professor Gerald Robotnik. Gerald could not finish the project on his own, so he contacted the Black Comet and used Black Doom's blood, and presumably his DNA to create Shadow. Shadow eventually gathers all the Chaos Emeralds and confronts Doom as Super Shadow. He then destroys the Black Comet with the Eclipse Cannon. In the end, he puts the past behind him and chooses to move forward. Also in the last battle of the game, Eggman confesses to Shadow that one of his robots found and saved him after the incident in Sonic Adventure 2, meaning he is the real Shadow and not a Shadow Android as was previously believed.

In the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game, Shadow is a playable character and has his own storyline which weaves with those of Sonic and new character Silver the Hedgehog. In this role, Shadow encounters the new villain Mephiles the Dark when the Scepter of Darkness falls and shatters. Shadow is sent to the future and is revealed to have become the enemy of mankind, due to their fear of his power. It is also been revealed that Shadow is sealed away by the reprogrammed Omega sometime during this event. Eventually, Mephiles gains hold of the seven Chaos Emeralds and merges with Iblis, becoming Solaris. Shadow turns into Super Shadow and joins with Super Silver and Super Sonic to defeat Solaris. The events of the game are then reset and do not occur, possibly leaving his future open.

Shadow appears in Sonic Rivals as a playable character alongside Sonic, Knuckles, Silver, and Metal Sonic. Summoned to a strange land by Dr. Eggman via a cryptic transmission asking for his aid, Shadow is able to successfully locate Dr. Eggman, but once he mentions the cryptic message, Dr. Eggman denies it. The mystery continues to unfold itself as Rouge warns him of an impending danger and upon stumbling across a secret about Dr. Eggman, her transmission is cut off short. Shadow continues his quest to uncover the truth about Dr. Eggman. Shadow also appears on four of the 150 collectible cards in the game.

Shadow is an unlockable character in the game Sonic Riders after beating the Hero Story Mode. He is a Speed type character, with his default Gear: Darkness, which he uses to skate like his default shoes. His Level 1 Attack is "Energy Ball", which temporally stuns a nearby opponent, the Level 2 attack is "Back Kick" which makes an opponent lose his/her balance temporally, and the Level 3 attack is "Chaos Control" which freezes a nearby opponent, so he can easily pass them. He now appears in the sequel Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity as a speed character, and his default gear is called Black Shot.

Shadow also appeared in the game Sonic and the Secret Rings, being the first unlockable character for the Party Mode (next ones being Cream, Silver and Blaze) by obtaining 30 Fire Souls.

Shadow also appears in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games as a speed character along with Sonic, Yoshi and Princess Daisy.

Shadow appears in the sequel to Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rivals 2. He is confronted by Metal Sonic and Eggman (through a speaker in Metal Sonic) tells him that he needs help. Before he can ask questions he and Metal Sonic find Espio and Silver. Curious as to why Silver has returned to the present he begins to follow Silver while Metal Sonic follows Espio. Eventually Shadow forgets to ask the Doctor why he is helping him and just continues to work with Metal Sonic. Eventually Shadow discovers that Eggman Nega is trying to release the Ifrit with the seven Chaos Emeralds. He enters the Chaos Inferno Zone to press the switch to seal the Ifrit in its own dimension, but he and Metal Sonic are trapped in the process. Metal Sonic tears himself open to reveal a Chaos Emerald, and Shadow Chaos Control's them back to their own dimension.

Shadow is an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros Brawl, found after Sonic becomes a playable character. Shadow activates Chaos Control when he is used, slowing down the user's opponents.

Shadow is a playable character in Sega Superstars Tennis.

Shadow will be appearing in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Details on him have not been revealed.
Personality

Shadow is a "lone wolf" and distances himself from Sonic and his friends. He is soft-spoken at times and minds his own business, but he never bluffs; if he makes a threat, he has every intention of carrying it out. This is seen in Shadow the Hedgehog, where Shadow tells Sonic in one of the storylines: "Sonic, if you try to stop me... I'll destroy you too!" Shadow is known to be a person who treats others in a very callous manner, and in combat, he has a natural "killer instinct" that Sonic lacks. Shadow has a vocabulary of bad words. As shown in "Shadow the Hedgehog", he will often say "Damn" throughout the game in reference to his failure or anger. Gradually, however, Shadow is becomming less violent, and even acts like a gentleman at times, especialy to Maria, as seen in his past. Aside from his dark behavior, he can be friendly with Sonic and Co., especially to Rouge. Even though he can get friendly with Sonic, he will often have a friendly competition with him.

At times Shadow has shown to have an alarming tendency to become at least slightly mentally unstable. This can be seen when his begins hallucinating Maria's face or his numerous threatening speeches. He appears to improve with amnesia but this tendency returns in the Shadow the Hedgehog game, where in the various possibilities he often pursues his foes with disturbing determination, laughs to himself demonically, believes himself to be an android, destroys a city and destroys entire city blocks in his rage. Shadow may be suffering from a mild form of Schizophrenia and may have a inferiority complex that forces him to ensure he is the highest form of life.
Interactions with other characters
Professor Gerald Robotnik

Shadow was created by the renowned scientist Prof. Gerald Robotnik, with the use of Black Doom's DNA. Gerald made many attempts to create the Ultimate Life Form before Black Doom and his children, the Black Arms came to Earth. Unfortunately, the closest he came was the Biolizard. But then Black Doom came and offered his help to Gerald, but only on one condition: If Black Doom helps Gerald, Gerald must promise to deliver the seven Chaos Emeralds. Gerald promised him this, and Black Doom gave some of his DNA to the DNA Gerald already had, and the result: Shadow the Hedgehog. Gerald seems to be one of few people who Shadow felt happy around.
Doctor Eggman/Doctor Ivo Robotnik

Shadow's approach to Dr. Eggman is different from most characters in the Sonic series. Shadow sees Eggman as the supergenius he has proven to be, instead of the megalomaniac that Sonic and the others see him as. This can be backed up by almost always Shadow calls Eggman by his title "the Doctor", as opposed to his alias Eggman. Eggman has shown similar respect by referring to Shadow's powers as "spectacular", and by how he sometimes applauds Shadow, as seen in Shadow the Hedgehog, when in a storyline he says "excellent job, Shadow." However, even though they have some manner of respect toward each other, they, in contrast, also have some manner of dislike toward each other. This can be backed up in Sonic the Hedgehog when Eggman referrs to Rouge as "My dear Rouge", and refers to Shadow by flatly saying his name. In the same game, when Shadow busts through the ceiling of his base, Eggman says: "So....What do you want now?", although he probably said that in that disgusted manner because Shadow smashed through Eggman's ceiling. In Shadow the Hedgehog, Eggman tells Shadow: "You will obey me, or there will be dire consequences". This evidence suggests that even though Shadow and Eggman have some respect for each other, they don't like each other much.
Maria Robotnik

Prof. Gerald's granddaughter Maria Robotnik by far is the one person that made Shadow the happiest. She was like a sister to him, and they shared the same dream: to visit Earth. Unfortunately, G.U.N. thought that Project Shadow deemed too big a threat to the world. As a result, they eliminated everything they could in relation to the project, including the people. Sadly, Maria was shot and killed by G.U.N. during the raid on the ARK. Her last parting words were "Bring hope to humanity." Shadow still stays strong to keep his promise to her and still mourns her death, although at the end of Shadow the Hedgehog he implies that he is putting his past behind him.
Black Doom

The relationship between Shadow and Black Doom may have been brief, but has played a significant role in Shadow's life. Shadow was made from Black Doom's blood, in a deal between the alien and Professor Gerald; this, technically, makes Black Doom Shadow's biological father. Black Doom, at first, tried to get Shadow on his side by playing on what remained of Shadow's painful memories of losing Maria. Regardless of the path taken during gameplay, Shadow in the end fights and defeats Black Doom (who transformed into Devil Doom) and then destroys the Black Comet with the Eclipse Cannon in the Last Story. Still, throughout the events of Shadow the Hedgehog Black Doom threatens Shadow and demands extreme loyalty and respect, even when choosing the Dark path in gameplay Doom acts with no compassion whatsoever. He also doesn't tolerate any kind of mistake or failure, no matter how difficult the task on Shadow's part may be. Black Doom was also Shadow's archenemy, similar to what Eggman is to Sonic.

Amy Rose

Shadow has a short but strong connection with Amy Rose. In Sonic Adventure 2, Amy begs Shadow to help Sonic and the others, but Shadow protests, saying this is the end of them all. Amy doesn't give up and finally manages to remind Shadow of what his only friend Maria wanted him to do. He then goes to help Sonic and company.
Sonic the Hedgehog

Shadow's arch rival is none other than Sonic the Hedgehog. They become enemies when meeting in Sonic Adventure 2, but later become allies. Since their relationship has dropped to arch rivals, they have some hostility toward each other, but won't hesitate to become allies if it is required.
Rouge the Bat

Shadow has a close relationship to Rouge the Bat. The two always look out for each other, as seen in Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and other game titles. In Sonic the Hedgehog, Rouge says that if the whole world were to turn against Shadow, Rouge would still fight by his side. This evidence shows that the two have some kind of relationship, but whether it is romantic or platonic is opinionated.
E-123 Omega

Shadow has a very close relationship with Omega who, other than Rouge, may be Shadow's only friend. This relationship is first shown when Shadow looks out for Omega in Sonic Heroes half way into the game. This was also shown in Shadow the Hedgehog when Shadow willingly helped Omega in Iron Jungle & Lava Shelter. In Sonic the Hedgehog, both Shadow and Omega were somewhat saddened by Omega reprogramming to hunt down Shadow in the future, due to Shadow becoming too strong of a lifeform.
G.U.N. Commander

The Commander and Shadow didn't get along at first as the Commander blamed Shadow for the death of his family, but after the events of Shadow the Hedgehog the Commander invited Shadow over, this is presumably the time that Shadow became a G.U.N. agent.
Metal Sonic

Shadow and Metal Sonic are forced to work together when Doctor Eggman calls for Shadow's assistance in Sonic Rivals 2. Although they are together for a brief amount of time Shadow does seem concerned about Metal Sonic multiple times, despite the fact that Metal Sonic is a robot with the inability to speak. Shadow constantly asks him if he's alright and at the end of the game when Metal Sonic tears himself open to retrieve the Chaos Emerald Shadow tells him to stop, for he fears Metal Sonic will destroy himself.
Team Chaotix

Shadow has had several altercations with the detective agency, the first being a confrontation in Sonic Heroes that escalated into a brawl, with their differences then seemingly set aside later when they joined forces against an evolved Metal Sonic. The Chaotix resumed their role as allies in Shadow the Hedgehog, with each member participating as a partner in the hero missions of various levels. Individually, Vector perceives Shadow as a friend as demonstrated in one of the endings of Shadow the Hedgehog when the crocodile attempted to console him when he concluded himself to being nothing more than a horrible weapon. While Espio has shown his capacity of friendship for the black hedgehog, Charmy has exercised a more enthusiastic relationship with Shadow, demonstrating how much he respects and looks up to him while often stating how 'cool' Shadow is. All the Chaotix voices are present in supporting Shadow during the Last Story as well as Expert Mode and the group have been shown assisting the black hedgehog during the third season of the anime series Sonic X by giving him a free ride to the battle against Dark Oak in outer space.
Other Characters

There are many characters, including Tails (except on Sonic X and Shadow the Hedgehog (video game)), Cream (except on Shadow the Hedgehog), and Knuckles (except on Sonic X and Shadow the Hedgehog (video game)), that Shadow has yet to interact with for very long, though their brief times together do not show signs of hostility on either characters' part.

Abilities

Basic traits between Shadow and Sonic are virtually identical. Like Sonic, Shadow is highly acrobatic, capable of gracefully leaping over many obstacles in his way. He can also perform Sonic's trademark 'Spin Attack', which is a variation on the tendency for hedgehogs to roll into tight balls for protection. Also, Shadow can skate at speeds fast enough to rival the speeds Sonic can run, although games have differed on who is faster (most games put them as equals while Sonic Battle's battle cards claimed Shadow is faster and the character profiles of Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 and Sonic Rivals cited Sonic as faster).

Additionally, Shadow is ageless and immortal. Also, although he is not as strong as power characters like Knuckles, with effort he can overturn objects too large for him to lift, such as trucks or peeled away asphalt, only with the Chaos Emerald he obtained.

He can also use different "Chaos powers," that have varying effects and names. Shadow's trademark move is Chaos Control, which allows him to warp time and space. Shadow uses it mainly to transport matter and/or to slow or stop time. The move actually allows the user to manipulate time and space to warp across "space" or move through or across "time". Sonic, Black Doom, Metal Sonic (as seen as Metal Overlord during Sonic Heroes), Biolizard, and Silver can also use Chaos Control, though the move originally appeared with Shadow and he makes the most extensive use of it. Although cutscenes and bios in manuals and websites often claim Shadow needs a Chaos Emerald to perform the technique, he has used it several times during gameplay as well as some cutscenes without a known Emerald in his possession. Shadow is also able to shape Chaos Control into a variety of offensive and defensive attacks, such as "Chaos Spear". As described in Shadow's game, all of his Chaos powers increase in correlation to the addition of a greater number of Chaos Emeralds, until reaching full power with all 7 Emeralds. It is currently unknown as to what extent Chaos Control can be used, as Shadow has never been seen using it on another object without warping himself along with it, but it has been shown that he can take objects and people into the warp with him, and all examples of this suggest he must be touching an object to bring it with him (such as transporting the Black Comet off Earth). When saving Rouge from Prison Island, he was seen touching her. Aside from it's final usage in Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow has used Chaos Control with 3 Emeralds at most, using Chaos Control to save Rouge from Prison Island, and they ended up on the ARK afterwards. It is assumed that 3 emeralds is enough to warp Shadow (and anything on his person) into space. It is seen that in the series of Sonic X he is holding four Chaos Emeralds and is not touching or holding Chris or Rouge to teleport them to the Space colony ARK.

Another form of attack that first appeared in the Shadow the Hedgehog game is an attack called "Chaos Blast" that is induced when Shadow commits acts of evil, filling his red gauge. While the Chaos Spear can attack single or multiple targets, the Chaos Blast is literally a shockwave of energy that eliminates anything and everything in a circular radius range. When this attack can be formed, his eyes and the streaks on his body begin to glow red.

As shown in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and Sonic X, Shadow is able to unleash more of his power if he takes off the rings on his wrists. Sonic X was the first to present this idea, which at first made it seem to be exclusive to the anime, as during the Sonic Adventure 2 adaption, Shadow loses his rings when trying to stop the ARK from crashing to earth. In the game, Sonic enters the ARK with one of Shadow's rings, but he is never shown actually losing them. In the anime, this increase in power comes at the expense of reducing his stamina, causing Shadow to become exhausted after a relatively short time engaged in combat as seen in episodes 60, 61, and 63 of the series. However in the video game series, he shows no sign of fatigue. The increase in his power from taking off his rings shows a drastic change in the final cutscene of his story in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, after he plows through what appears to be hundreds of copies of Mephiles. This ability was also demonstrated in recent issues of the Archie comic as mentioned below, wherein Shadow removed the rings in order to call up his full power when he engaged the newly-reborn Enerjak in combat.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow has shown that he can also use a wide range of firearms, semi-automatics, heavy assault, and close-combat weapons. He can also improvise with debris, and drive a wide range of vehicles, as shown in Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Riders, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). This proves a great distinction between him and Sonic because, in the same game, Sonic says he'd never get caught using a gun, and prefers running over using a vehicle.

By harnessing the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, Shadow is able to use super transformation to transform into Super Shadow. He is bestowed with the new abilities of flight and near invulnerability, like Super Sonic, and his normal abilities of speed and power are greatly enhanced.
Attacks

Spin Attack: While in locomotion, Shadow can curl down and take on a fetal position, rolling along the ground at a very high speed and rate of torque, meant primarily for breaking through barriers, or destroying enemies.

Spin Jump: Also referred to as the "spinball jump," Shadow is able to leap into the air and curl into a spinning, tightly compacted ball of destruction which can destroy enemies and break barriers.

Spin Dash: Originally named the "Super Spin Dash," Shadow is able to curl down and begin revving up, taking on a diagonally pivoted, ovular shape. Once unleashed, Shadow blasts forward in an acceleration roll of high speeds with limited airborne capability, meant to break barriers or mow down enemies.

Jump Dash/Homing Attack: While airborne in spinball form, Shadow can burst forward in a sudden jolt of speed in a linear path enveloped in an yellow aura, and when an enemy or object is near, the jump can be used to home right into the nearby enemy or object with extreme impact power.

Light Dash: When a trail or pattern of rings is in close proximity, Shadow is able to zoom across the trajectory of the ring path at lightspeed, defying gravity and collecting all of them in a flash.

Chaos Control: With the use of a single Chaos Emerald and, at times, a mind set on justice, Shadow is able to warp time and space and teleport to a desired destination, as well as manipulate time by freezing it speeding it up, or slowing it down. He can damage his enemies by ramming them whilst teleporting. If Shadow uses Chaos Control at the same time as another, he can use the resulting tear in space-time continuum to travel through time.

Chaos Spear: Shadow raises his hand and can throw down a large array of highly destructive yellow streams of chaos energy at his opponent. This attack either damages the opponent or stuns them, depending how it is used. In his Super form, Shadow is able to charge up and shoot a single, yet more powerful Spear. This attack can be advanced into the Chaos Lance.

Black Tornado: When in mid-air, Shadow can assume spinball form and repeatedly follow the trajectory of a perfect circle, stirring up a substantially powerful vortex of black colored winds, sending anything caught in it flying up into the air and ultimately helpless.

Triangle Jump: Shadow basically Jump Dashes between walls. He can also run on them for a very limited amount of time after instigating a jump as well but he can only remain rooted on a wall for a short period of time when still.

Chaos Blast: When the darkness of his psyche is in control, Shadow is able to unleash a highly destructive and explosive energy around him with the use of a single Chaos Emerald. This blast spreads and eliminates nearly everything in a 5-10 yard radius.

Chaos Attack: As if the Homing Attack wasn't good enough on its own, Shadow uses Chaos energy to enhance the amount of damage dealt, even taking out multiple enemies at once. However, it can only be used five times, regardless of the amount of targets.

Spin Kick: Shadow basically performs a spinning kick whether moving or still that resembles break-dancing somewhat. If he is still when performing this attack, it can create a small tornado that can suck enemies in and damage them.

Chaos Lance: Shadow creates a single red lance of chaos energy that strikes his enemy, stunning them as well as damaging them.

Strength: Like most of the other Sonic characters, Shadow possesses strength above that of an average human.
Sonic X

Shadow, as seen in an episode of the anime, has white rings as a mistake instead of his gold ones in the games. Shadow also appears on the anime Sonic X. Episodes 33 through 38 are based on Sonic Adventure 2, with quite a few differences from the game. For one, it was Chris Thorndyke who reminded Shadow of his true promise from Maria, not Amy Rose. Afterwards, he makes short appearances in flashbacks, but he makes his true return in episode 60, “The Return of Shadow”. In Japan he is voiced by his game voice actor, but in the dub he is voiced by Jason Griffith, who also does the voice of Sonic.

In Season 2, Shadow had no clear memory of his mysterious past, although in one episode, he seems to have an image of Maria in his mind. However, he cannot seem to work out who she really was. In that same episode, Dr. Eggman visits people of a planet the Metarex are warring with, including one orange-haired female teenager by the name of Molly. Shadow and Rouge meet her, and at the end of the French/Japanese version of the episode, Molly was killed by the Metarex. Shadow erects a makeshift grave for her, and Rouge notes that she was similar to Maria. In the English dub Molly is seen flying off into the sky and instead of a grave, Shadow says that he will miss her and he is worried about her being all alone out in space.
Sonic the Hedgehog (comic)

Shadow, as seen on the cover of issue #146.Shadow also appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, and his origin is identical to that in the games in that he was created by Gerald Robotnik to stand against the threat of Black Doom and the Black Arms. He debuted in an adaptation of the game Sonic Adventure 2, with a few changes to accommodate the Archie version of Mobius/Earth. The comic skips over the events of Sonic Heroes, and Shadow reappears with an explanation of how he survived his apparent death: an alien race, the Bem, rescued him so he could combat their enemy, the alien Xorda, buying the Bem time to escape. However, Shadow could not defeat the Xorda (even in his super form) and plummeted toward Mobius. He survived the fall and was found by Sonic, who brought him before Maximillian Acorn so that he could warn him of the impending threat of the Xorda, allowing the House of Acorn to amass an army of allies to stand against the Quantum Dial weapon.

Shadow often works alone to achieve his goal, which is to discover the truth about his mysterious history. He has at times allied with Sonic and the Freedom Fighters to fight greater evils, like the Xorda, and he has been known to work either for or against Dr. Robotnik depending on the circumstances (once even threatening to kill him). Often, he will side with whomever he believes will bring him closer to the truth. This search has led him to interact with various other characters, including the robot Isaac, Brotherhood of Guardians member Locke, and various versions of Metal Sonic. Shadow also has some connection with the being or beings responsible for the creation of Croctobot, the robot created from a fusion of Crocbot and Octobot. In addition to Sonic, Shadow has also established a rivalry with Scourge the Hedgehog, an evil version of Sonic from another dimension and former leader of the Anti-Freedom Fighters. He has also sworn to protect Hope Kintobor at all costs, viewing it as atoning for Maria's death since Hope is one of the few living beings to show compassion towards him besides Maria, and also bears a striking resemblance to her (enough so that he nearly mistook Hope for Maria at one point).

Like Tails, Shadow was kidnapped by the nanite villain A.D.A.M. and used to gather all the Chaos Emeralds in the unvierse, but later used his Super form and Chaos powers to send them to the Zone of Silence. He eventually gained possession of a copy of Professor Gerald's diary, and learned from it that he had been created to protect Mobius from the return of the Black Arms. Resolving to fulfill his creator's wish, Shadow joined the Guardian Units of Nations, or G.U.N. He later arrived in New Mobotropolis in response to a distress call from Sally Acorn, and engaged Enerjak, a brainwashed and superpowered version of Knuckles the Echidna. By removing his power inhibitors, Shadow was able to match him for a time, but failed to maintain his power long enough to defeat him before Enerjak was captured by the Egg Fleet.

All of Shadow's Chaos powers in the comic book series come from the greatest power in the universe, the Chaos Force (also referred to as "The Power of Chaos"), a mystical energy field that serves as a wellspring for all Chaos powers. Knuckles states at one point that Shadow must have direct access to this energy, even without an Emerald, as displayed when Shadow sub-consciously halted a squadron of 'Metal Sonic Troopers' and teleported himself, Sonic, and a wounded Hope to Castle Acorn using Chaos Control in the absence of an Emerald.

Possible Future

In the second version of the comic's Mobius: 25 Years Later "possible future" storyline, Shadow becomes King of Mobius and the husband of Sally Acorn. Because of this, Sonic and Sally's children Sonia and Manik, from another possible future, never exist. In this future, Shadow rules the planet with an iron fist, with a futuristic Knuckles serving as his chief enforcer. In addition, he has an alliance with Lien-Da, Grand Master of the Dark Legion, despite the disapproval of her ancestor Dimitri, who considers her pact with Shadow to be as bad as his own previous alliance with Dr. Finitevus. After King Sonic (from another possible future) and Lara-Su return from their excursions to the past and join forces, Shadow orders their imprisonment, along with a number of other enemies such as Rotor the Walrus and Tails. Due to his Chaos-derived reality warping abilities, Shadow was fully aware that history had been altered, and so was determined to keep anyone from acting on it. However, his reign came to an end when he was defeated by none other than Lara-Su, who used Chaos Control to freeze him in time, an attack so powerful that she joked that she didn't think her great-great-great-great-great grandchildren would have to worry about him.
Shadow Androids

Shadow Androids are robots based on Shadow that first appeared in Sonic Heroes, though it was never actually stated to be such. Instead, one Team Dark cutscene showed a broken Shadow robot, and another one showed an entire room of Androids in stasis, which affected the story in a way, making several characters believe Shadow was a robot. The Shadow Androids reappeared in Shadow the Hedgehog as somewhat strong enemy robots on the single-player mode's "Iron Jungle" and "Lava Shelter" stages, along with the "Iron Jungle" boss. These androids can counter Shadow's Homing Attacks, or lock-on to Shadow and toss rockets at him, which they seem to use more often than the Homing Attack. At the last Team Dark cutscene of Sonic Heroes, when Rouge finds the multiple Shadow androids, she suspects that Shadow is an android, but Omega says that the real Shadow exists, as there is no way anyone could make Shadow androids without the real Shadow. While Shadow is facing Black Doom in his Devil Doom form, Eggman says that he used a robot to rescue Shadow as or after he fell from the Space Colony ARK in Sonic Adventure 2, meaning that while Shadow was in a stasis tube, Eggman was making Shadow androids.

In the multi-player mode of Shadow the Hedgehog, there are six special Shadow Androids. Four of these robots are silver with green, pink, orange, or blue stripes, each wielding either an alien-like machine gun or a bazooka. They also resemble Metal Sonic. The other two look more like Shadow, but on one of them, the stripes are yellowish-orange instead of red. These two, like the real Shadow, start off without weapons but can carry any other weapon they collect and have limited ammo while the other four androids can only use their built-in weapons which have unlimited ammo. The androids can activate Dark Shadow and all of its normal effects and attacks, just like the real Shadow. Hero Shadow does not seem to be available as there are no good deeds for the player to do to fill the Hero gauge and Chaos Control (the in-level version) would be useless in multi-player mode. All of these androids claim to be the "real Shadow", and claim that the others are fakes.
